Default Australian PM urges calm as violence flares in Sydney and Melbourne

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009...dents-attacked

Kevin Rudd, the Australian prime minister, today called for calm amid escalating anger over a spate of attacks against Indian students in Sydney and Melbourne.

Indians in the two cities have been involved in standoffs with police during a wave of protests that began two weeks ago after Shravan Kumar, a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, was stabbed with a screwdriver in an attack that left him fighting for his life.

The stabbing was the latest in a sharp rise in violent robberies in Australia's two biggest cities, many of which appear to target Indian students.

Melbourne police have estimated that Indians have been the victims in at least 27% of thefts in the city's crime-stricken western district in the last year.

In the last two days protests against the alleged racial violence have shifted to the western Sydney suburb of Harris Park where Lebanese youths – a group often reviled by the media and blamed for starting the Cronulla Beach race riots in 2005 – clashed with Indian students in the streets.

Rudd condemned the violence yesterday, but denied the crimes were racially motivated. "The truth is, in our cities right across the country, there are acts of violence every day. That's just a regrettable fact of urban life," he said.

Police say the attacks are often ordinary thefts and that Indian students are vulnerable because they travel alone late at night to part-time jobs or from university carrying valuables such as laptop computers.

Rudd insisted that Australia remained "one of the safest countries in the world" for international students.

However, Simon Overland, Victoria state's police chief, admitted that some of the attacks were "clearly racist in motivation" as he visited Melbourne yesterday with the state premier, John Brumby, in an attempt to counter the growing perception that it was no longer a safe destination.

Victoria attracts many Indian students. Education is ranked as Australia's third largest export, worth more than AU$15bn (£7.4bn) a year, of which about AU$2bn is earned from the 81,520 vocational and university students from India who have been enrolling into Australian institutions at an ever increasing rate over the past decade.

The violence threatens to undermine the industry as tempers have flared in India, where protesters have been burning effigies of Rudd on the streets of New Delhi, spurred on by a steady rise of racist taunts from Australia.

A Facebook group with about 65,000 members has been used to attack immigrants who "do not adapt to the Australian way of life" and includes discussion topics such as "Will Indian race-rioters be hunted down?" and "All foreigners need to be euthanised".

yeah this is terrible. Been happening for a while now.

Analysis should not be diverted by reflections upon the zeal with which the victors at the end of the Second World War punished the defeated for war crimes. The victors were animated by the ideals of the Atlantic Charter and of the United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was about to peep over the eastern horizon. But first, they wanted a little hanging.

It's mainly Lebanese who are doing it in Sydney. Those wonderful fellows who were the target of the outrage at the Cronulla riots.

Also, Indian media is having a frenzy over this. There was a sensationalist article in India recently about a journalist who was assaulted while investigating dodgy immigration/education businesses. It turns out the assailant was an Indian, a fact conveniently left out of the article.

These attacks are for the most part not being undertaken by the white majority in Australia. It is ethnic minority on ethnic minority. It's one of the wonderful side effects of a huge immigration programme.

But, to be honest, I am not fussed if the Indian media keeps sensationalizing this. We have enough foreigners on our shores as it is, and this false information may just make the endless trickle a little smaller.

What they don't mention in this article is that initially it was the Indian Students who started the fights. They would get into too fights in the train stations, too bad that they picked on a group who would fight back. The Indian students acted like Thugs, now they're whinging about being victims.

in melbourne, its primarily lowlifes bashing anyone they can.
they do it in pubs, outside schools, malls, parking complex's, cinemas, even outside hospitals.
they dont target anyone or any race in particular,
just everyone. they do not care who or what you are, or what you have or have not done to them.
i understand the indians feel singled out, and in a few cases they actually are, but not all the cases in which is driving them to these protests.

the problem isnt the racism of a particular few, its the fraction if idiots who have seen Fight Club too many times.

ive no idea about sydney but i do know , as boof stated, that the lebanese gangs are the instigators of a majority of BS in that city.

So the media is spinning it as a frantic nationalist frenzy?

Here's the Times of India's response to the revelations that their article was a load of BS.

Now have a read of this crap

Honestly, if you people think Australia is that bad, either don't come here or go home. I don't care. I know where I'd rather live, and most Indians who visit or live here know what a great, friendly place it is.

And India has the nerve to criticize safety in Australia when they have bombs exploding in the middle of their cities?

There's no evidence, and I highly doubt, that Indian students were targeted because of their race/nationality. IMO, Indian students are more susceptible to violence due to these reasons:

    1. Erratic working hours (if you were a uni student with one or two part time jobs, you'd understand)
    2. They generally live in the poorer suburbs of Sydney, because of cheaper accomodation/housing; these suburbs, are of course, more susceptible to crime
    3. Indian students are seen as weaker targets by thugs, mainly because of racial stereotypes.

Seriously, no-one is going "curry-bashing". These attacks are isolated, and would have been avoided if more caution and common sense was displayed by these student. Starting a small riot, and beating three Lebanese men is not the best way to portray yourself as victims...

This is interesting. Seems to be part of a larger trend going about in the world. Economic conditions worsen and make lives harder for everyone. The majority group looks for something or someone to blame and directs their anger towards the minority group. Resentment grows and we witness situations such as this one.

Nonsense. There are no "pogroms" against the Indians, even the isolated attacks are not racially-inspired - except for a few exceptions, but you get racist rednecks in every country.

Just out of curiosity are these Christian Lebanese or Muslim Lebanese?

Muslim or Christian it doesn't matter, they all act like gangsters and have those ridiculous haircuts. you know, the ones where they shave the sides, leave the middle and a small pony tail.
Some are alright but many, jeez, they fail at school, do drugs or go doing other criminal activities. They all, if not most speak English since they have mostly been born in Australia.

Just like the elephant animation, this Carthage scenario is actually in the game, it just has a small percantage factor for showing up, that's all...
