These are my tactics, thoughts, and opinions about SPQR 7.0.
1. To beat any Carthiginian army with elephants, always use your light infantry (velites, light auxilia, or any mercanary skirmisher) to take out the elephants first. SPQR is built to have long battles so your infantry can almost always hold off the enemy infantry long enough for you to do this.
2. Use your slingers or archers to take out the elite infantry and cavalry of the enemies' army. Remember you cause more casulties if you hit them from the right side or from behind.
3. Try to follow lt1956's houserules in a way that suits you.
4. Follow Hesus de bodemloze's guide to the first 15 turns, its a great guide to get through the hard few years.
5. Secure a Northern border as soon as you can! The Guals breed like bunny rabbits and you must make sure that you have a strong force up there.
6. Try to avoid contact with the Germans for as long as you can. This means you can't take Patavium or Darantasia. They are a stronger version of Gual!
7. Flank the enemy army with your cavalry and reserve infantry. It will be your best friend when deployed right.
8. When facing enemy cavalry, use spearmen to help your own cavalry as the enemies is better than yours.
9. When attacking a new land bring at least 5 legions along, with ready reinforcements. Also make sure you still have funds so that you can build temples for happines when you get there.
10. Destroy the enemies temples, odeons, or execution buildings, they give you bad public order.
11. Always try to stop superfactions from forming! If you don't its 10x harder once they become a superfaction. Usually Gual, Pontus, and Greece become superfactions.
12. Adapt your legions to your enemy. Carthage should have more light infantry, Gual, Germany, Greece, and Macedon need more cavalry, and Parthia and Armenia need more archers in your legion when you fight them.
13. Spread your generals around in your empire. For example my 6 star is in Gual, my 7 star is in Greece, my 9 star is Spain, and my 8 star is in Carthage.
14. Try to get settlements that have either mines or wonders. Mines should be wonders as they give you tons of denarii!!!
15. Be a free spender with your economy, especially in buildings. Convert at least 1/5 of it on Mines, traders and ports, another 1/5 on keeping your new territories loyal, 1-2/5 on military and at least 1/5 in reserve.
16. Generals with less than 3 loyalty should not be legates! Put them in a settlement until they are loyal again!
17. When you get later on in the game, let your auxilia's be the first line of defense! Legions are worth more than gold, don't waste them!
18. Never siege a settlement unless you have at least another full stack in support.
19. Remember the Garrison script!!! The enemy always will have more men guarding the settlement.
20. Never engage your generals in the fight, if they die you lose! They are good though if the enemy is wavering or routing. This is the only time I recommend you order them to engage.
21. Never use your legions as a garrison!!! Like I said they are worth more than gold.
22. Use light infantry to kill off chariots. They can kill off some of the most powerful units in the game but can't defeat a unit of militia in hand to hand combat.
23. Shield wall is great against the barbarian factions. Don't let those scummy barbarians have any advantage!
24. Always chase the enemy when they are routing with cavalry. The more you kill the less that will come back.
25. Aim to kill the enemy's general. Without him alive, they won't have a reason to fight.
Thats it for now, hopefully it helps you people.
