    Default Migration games

I did a search and came up with nothing, so I thought I would start this thread. I'm curious to know if anyone else plays a "migration game" in DLV. What I mean by that is, do you take your factions leaders and migrate them to a different portion of the map before settling down?

In my current game, playing as the Desert Tribes, I did just this. I like the DT but hate their starting position (boxed in by Egypt, the Seljuks, and the Crusader kingdoms). I decided that I would be better off moving the whole faction to a different part of the map, so I gathered all their armies and slowly marched them north. I had to pass through the lands of the Seljuks and Armenians, but I never attacked them, and they never attacked me (even though they weren't happy about my hordes moving through their territory).

I had to sack couple of rebel settlements along the way to generate enough cash to avoid bankruptcy (and also to reinforce and resupply my armies), but it gave the game a "horde-like" feel to it. When I was able to, I hired a fleet of mercenary ships for the last part of the journey, put everyone on the boats, and finally reach my new homeland: the Crimea.

I took Cherson (but didn't sack it) and made it my new capital as soon as I could afford it (10000 GP is not cheap), and let the old lands rebel. To solve the problem of my king's crown, I modded my own mod and edited the files so that Cherson is now the city in which the king is crowned instead of Medina (the old capital).

I'm now into the reign of my second sultan and have established a nice little base in the Crimean Peninsula. It's far away from the poor desert provinces and boxed-in starting position, but close enough to participate in jihads if the opportunity arises (just a short boat ride down the Black Sea and around Turkey and you're in the Holy Land).

Anyway, I'm curious to know if anyone else has ever played a game in this manner when they like a certain faction, but hate their starting position. It may not be entirely realistic, but some people did historically migrate from one place to another, and it's been a lot of fun playing a "horde-style" migration game. I've done these type games before when playing RTW and other MTW mods, but this is my first game of this type in DLV.

Migrating is the journey from emigration; packing up everything you got and leave, and immigration; settle in another land for a save heaven.

Send out spys/cogs to investigate the area( or be a cheater and press 'toggle_fow').
Send out (cogs with) priests to bend the will of the new land to your will and to avoid rebellion.
Send out fleets/armys with everything; Generals, cavalry, infantry, merchants, ...
...but not diplomats. Sell of any land to your naighbours worst enemy, or to the pope as a lobby gift.

The big prize areas that fit the Capital region title(lots of other regions around it)

Americas - Extremely rich, extremely remote, little competition.
Emeral isles - Rich, very remote.
Scandinavia pen. - Very remote, little competition.
    Italia - Very rich, remote.
    Greece - Very rich.
    Iberia - Rich, remote.

    - DLV will automaticly spawn a free Horde(1 - 3 stacks of regular soliders/knights) once the last settlement is lost. Take advantage, sell away the other settlement's, and make sure your (nemesis)naighbour visit your last settlement/capital.

    - DLV must crown their new heir in a capitol. Large factions should migrate to other capitals with the same religion, in order to avoid civil war. Small factions (2-4 characters) have more unity, and can easily migrate any where.

Flanders is awsome. They don't stand a chanch, jet you throw in all your chips.

I was playing as Flanders. A strong 2 state County, pushed and bullied between the nasty germans, tyrnats of the emeral isles, the arrogan frenche and barbaric Danumark Rige. We were constantly beaten, so there was no way(not even in hell nor heaven) we would survive this. But we still held it togather, like the FFL, "Marche ou crčve" (March or die...).

    1199 AD.
Allmost 20 years later; 4 dead fathers, brothers and uncles later, France and HRE got excommunicated for their faul actions(with help from a flemish lobbiest). I decided to lend alot of cash and recruit 2 cog fleets, and boarded all the troops on the first fleet. I then sold every building in Bruges(capitol), for about 10 000 florins. I gave away Antwerpen to my ally Laga Lombarde(Milan). The next turn, France Attacked Bruges and 1 stack of angry Flemish rebels merged up and under my command. They boarded the second fleet.

We arrive at the beaches in the new world. We took over a small land called Guantanamo. But the people there didn't like our army, interigation techniqs nor our holy men, so we left that place for the big Aztec capitol. There we fought huge battles! 10s thousends of stacks of crazy unarmed wierdos, charging our pikes and lances. There... they met their justice eventualy.

Though with huge casualties... We had won every engagement with the reds, and it was time for the last mighty battle. This would payback my 90 000 florins debt + the 80 000 interest debt, I was in with the jew-bank.
At the last big battle, at the capitol, I felt... the touch of god... It really hurt... the last remaining family memeber fe... *!... auhh..........................

    - Graf of Flanders.
Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

    Wille,

Can a Christian actually be crowned the Aztec king if you take their capitol?
Can any king be crowned in the capitol of an opposite faith if they have converted the province?
I know I'm 'SGFNP' man but I've never tried any of this stuff!

Definitely worth clarifying in the Guide... Nice thread guys!

I'm thinking of doing another game with Desert Tribes (love that faction for some reason), and moving them all the way down to Timbuktu and Arguin for the gold and ivory.

Problem is you can only crown your king in your original capitol! Or am I missing something here?

Edit.... oops, I see Wille has already mentioned that... my bad!

    Interesting.

Me, I'm too lazy & would rather use all that time/energy to crush my neighbors.

To answer your question, there is one faction I'd consider using the tactic you describe. Teutonic. Them having Acre is totally illogical to me and its one of the reasons I've never bothered to play them. I guess you could put DT in the same category.

    Nice .

    Morty

P.S. A request: Could you post something on this thread down the road further into your campaign? I'm very curious as to how that works out for you.

Well normally, it is only the capitol, but you can edit the "export_descr_ancillaries" file and change the city in which your king is crowned. I do that all the time whenever I play migration games (which is fairly often).

Morty, I started a new game last night and migrated Desert Tribes to Timbuktu. The Crimea just didn't seem right. Anyway, Timbuktu is now my capitol and I'm in the process of conquering Arguin for the monopoly on the gold and ivory down there.

My second sultan received his crown in Timbuktu with no problems after I edited the file.

    Hey Bama,

If you write up a tutorial on how to you do that I would like to put it in the Guide. We could do a chapter on How to Change your 'Crowned' capitol. Very useful info for all players. Migration campaigns add quite a bit of life to DLV for people that have been playing for a while.

Yeah, no problem. I can do it this weekend. I also need to update some files for my Desert Tribes crown mod.

I love playing migration games. It's definitely a unique experience from the "normal" DLV games...
