I am trying to add a new unit following the tutorial. In fact, the unit name is the same as in the tutorial (ionian_hoplite)
I get a CTD before the splash screen.
ˇThe number in the top is increased
ˇThe new unit is in the middle of the file
ˇThe textures and meshes are renamed

Me thinks there is a lot wrong with your entries, change everything to this and rename your mesh files to match. Haven't got the game loaded so we'll use you as the guinea pig to test things. Crash before splash screen is the battlemodels file which has to be corrected before we move onto the entry in the EDU.

If you haven't made any other changes in the battlemodels file try this one, post your log entries if it crashes.
