Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice - David Galula - Less than 150 pages, but is the basis of modern counterinsurgency warfare.

On Guerrilla Warfare - Mao - A classic describing what a guerrilla must do to win.

The Sling and the Stone - Thomas Hammes - Excellent book, with an excellent description of early Iraq. Author was part of the Anti-Rumsfeld Revolt.

Multinational Force - Iraq Commander's Counterinsurgency Guidance - David Petraeus - Basic points of counterinsurgency condensed into guidelines.

Learn to Eat Soup with a Knife - John Nagl - Uses Vietnam and the Malayan Emergency to show general counterinsurgency lessons.

Descent into Chaos - Ahmed Rashid - A great description of Afghanistan from the invasion till early 2009. A must read.
