CTD for any settlement in mediterranean climate

but have now isolated it to appearing to be a text editing related problem.

symptom CTD half way along loading bar on attempting to load any battle (custom or campaign) which involves settlement (siege battle) in mediterranean climate. Non settlement battles in med' climate work fine. Settlement battles work fine in all other climates.

To try and isolate what causes it I've started again from vanilla - so now have copy of british_isles folder, renamed to mod name. The 'vanilla'* re-named folder worked fine no prob with custom siege battle in med' climate - (*only change made to map_climates.tga and new .rwm)

First set of changes I re-introduced produced same problem again. Trouble is changes were only adding in new factions - files involved =

descr_lbc_db.txt
descr_banners_new.xml
names.txt
expanded.txt
campaign_descriptions.txt
battle_models.modeldb

am somewhat baffled as I can't spot anything climate related in any of those files
(I'm not trying to load battle with any of the new factions either so it's not directly that something is missing for one of them)

EDIT: narrowed problem down to descr_characters.txt - so might be to do with the battle model its calling - but still can't work out why that would only cause problem with one climate and only if settlement present...

turns out to be a too long (not miscounted) path / name length of the captain models attachment line in use in DMB see
