Default Mummified Dinosaur Skin Yields Up New Secrets

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0707203728.htm
Scientists from The University of Manchester have identified preserved organic molecules in the skin of a dinosaur that died around 66-million years ago.The well-preserved fossil of the plant-eating hadrosaur – known as ‘Dakota’ – has been analysed by researchers writing in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
The team report how the fossil's soft tissues were spared from decay by fine sediments that formed a mineral cast.
A wide range of tests have shown that the fossil still holds cell-like structures, although the constituent proteins have decayed.
Advanced imaging and chemical techniques have revealed that the mummified duckbilled dinosaur had two layers of skin – just like the skin of modern birds and reptiles, which scientists believe are closely related to duckbilled dinosaurs.
They believe the hippo-sized Dakota fell into a watery grave, with little oxygen present to speed along the decay process. Meanwhile, very fine sediments reacted with the soft tissues of the animal, forming a kind of cement.
As a result, the 66 million-year-old fossil still retains some of the organic matter of the original dinosaur, mixed in with the minerals.
"You're looking at cell-like structures; you slice through this and you're looking at the cell structure of dinosaur skin,” said Dr Phil Manning, Senior Lecturer in Palaeontology & Research Fellow School of Earth, Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences (SEAES). “That is absolutely gobsmacking."
Interesting, yet more corroborating evidence of the link between Dinosauria and Aves . I'm amazed the tissue hadn't decayed completely in the millions of years it has been buried, it's really amazing. Hopefully other secrets and discoveries can be found in the future.

So we have true Dino DNA right?

Tell me we can clone dinosaurs now

In 200 or 300 years, a mad scientists will probably attempt this

why does it have to be a 'mad' scientist? Is it really that crazy to try and clone dinosaurs for scientific research?
    You look great today.

It's not as easy as it appears to be. For one thing, there will probably be many failures before a successful Dinosaur is created, if at all. Anther problem is the financing, this is going to cost a crap load of money and last but not least, we have no idea how the Dinosaur's immune system would react to 21st century diseases and we also have no idea what to feed the animal (unless prehistoric plants were replicated as well, but even then they could be the wrong plants). It's really a monumental undertaking.

i prefer that mad scientits make a breakthrough in spacial exploration to be honest

i wish i was a space cow boy

well... thinking about it, riding a t-rex isn't that bad

if they can be tamed of course

and genetically manipulated to be tinier

    or how about just velociraptors?

Why would you want to clone dinos? If only perhaps to design a new type of cool ass leather.

What do you call a blind dinosaur? A Doyouthinkhesaurus? Haha. That was just for you, Nikos.

Yes, up until dinosaurs killed everyone. I think I'd rather stay at the top of the food chain.

We still would be. Just those movies gave the dinos impenetrable skin so bullets had no effect

Besides we'd have them in zoos. What could go wrong

Thats why god gave us the M1 Abrams tank, Rocket launchers, grenades, miniguns, hollow point rounds etc.

    Back to topic:
I always imagined how cloning dinosaurs would begin and end, maybe in a few years we will witness the first tiny reptile monsters in cloning labs and zoo's, or even keep them as pets, yeah now theres an idea to keep burglers out of your house .

    A regrettable but necessary outcome.

Dino-rider, pet raptor, jurassic park, I want to fly on a.. ah cant think of the name. The one really popular flying dinosaur.

A ton of reasons that stem from me being stuck at the age of five.

On the other hand, we may see a Woolly Mammoth brought back in the next 20 years, I'm much more excited about that.
    That is pretty cool actually

Pterodactyls are not Dinosaurs, they are flying reptiles, only distantly related.

do you have no love for science and knowledge? we could learn so much about them if we could clone them!

Wow, awesome! I bet they will, one day, clone a dinosaur. It's not really far fetched idea and here we might have some intact dna.

    Jurassic Park FTW!

Still quite far away from that I'm afraid, there hasn't been any tests on this skin to see if DNA remains. Even if DNA does remain, it may be too degraded to be used to clone. I'm confident that we will have the technology and means to resuscitate Dinosaurs one day, just not anytime soon. On the other hand, we may see a Woolly Mammoth brought back in the next 20 years, I'm much more excited about that.

Oh, yea! I forgot about that mammoth they found. There have been so many cool discoveries in this decade.

It's bigger then the Mammoth they have just found, the whole Mammoth genome has been sequenced, it's just a question of "when" now, not "if".
