Default Fixed Squares with larger unit sizes

if you're using a custom unit multiplier, like 2.5x for example, you wouldve noticed square formation looks pretty craptastic, as theyre so huge but only 2 ranks deeps. i thought it looked stupid when a cavalry charge would fail against a 2 rank deep square, but easily plough through a 3 rank deep line head on (hidden defence bonus for square causes this)

So i got the pike square formation to work with regular line troops. The formation is completely packed with no gaps in the middle. the front rank doesnt crouch however, but 2 ranks per side usually fire. its slightly more historically accurate as squares were usually around 20mx20m per side. see screenshot.

here is how to do it for whatever infantry unit you want:

    1) backup your patch.pack as thats what i editted. you can use your own custom pack if you want.

    2) open patch.pack and expand patch>db>unit_stats_land_tables>unit_to_stats_land

    3) once there scroll until you find the unit / units you want to have pike square.

    4) now scroll across to the very far right, to the very end value. the coloumn should be 'can use pike square formation?', and most units, except pikemen, it will be set to False. change it to True (for the units you want to have it)

    5) now you have done that expand patch>db>unit_to_unit_abilities_junctions_tables>unit_to_unit_abilites

    6) again find the unit / units you editted to have the ability in step 4.now you have 2 options:

    • clone the row for the unit, for example euro_line_infantry_britain - square_formation, and replace square_formation with pike_square_formation
    • replace square_formation with pike_square_formation
you could even let them have both abilities and set up a pike square within the regular square.

not sure if ai will use a pike square formation though in situations when theyd use a regular square...havent had time to test it properly in game.

shame the front ranks dont crouch though.

only other problem is the men facing away loose there guns as well, i think they are looking for the pike animation.

Hi Ergonomics, good idea is your one
but I am in troubles with units more then 4 hundreds men in size.
normal square or pike square formation will works only when due to casualties units decrease to about 400 men.
    any idea about it

That matter has been unsolved so far.
