    Default Realistic Ship Names

I am interested in working on a mod for realistic, faction correct ship names; any ideas on how this can be done?

    What tools would I need?

I don't know 'cause I'm not a moder. In fact, I'm a noob when it comes to this.

Buuuuttt.... If you figure it out, could we have a british ship named the HMS Suprise?

Oh! And also, can't you just rename ships in the campain? I do it all the time. It's easy too!

I'm almost positive I've had an HMS Suprise before.

And yes, why don't you just re-name your ships in game? It isn't that difficult.

    How do you do that?

I was thinking on a mod where the ship names are historical per class/type.

When you have the unit selected, just bring up the information panel about it. When you are there, look at the top of the panel and click where the ship's name is displayed. When you click on it, it will allow you to type in whatever you want.

Happy naming. My most decorated ship was the HMS Jagermeister

I'm 99% sure I've had an Acheron vs Surprise before in Custom battle before. No joke.

Ah Master and Commander, one of my fav films

    Anyway, back on topic :

I believe there is a file in the main.pack which contains all the regiment names so there should be one for the ship names,

Tell me if you find anything cos i need this for The Elite Irish Units Mod

Speaking of Master & Commander, It would be neat if ships could hide just like land units. But I don't just mean disappear, I mean hide most of the crew below deck and make your ship look like it's a different ship class. Then when they board your ship, surprise!

Oh look! It's an enemy sloop.

    No wait! That's a 3rd rate!

I know that it's imposable but it would be so cool.

there's a nice list on wikipedia:

A list of Royal Navy ships isn't a concise list of all ships of the period, imperialist swine!

Yes, there is already a Surprise.

It is not difficult to change the stock ship names, you want to look at the localisation pack. The names are nation-specific, but I'm not sure how it's organised. Unfortunately there does not seem to be any mechanism to stop a frigate from being given a sloop's name.

    They already have realistic names.

I tried to give the US proper names, in other words seperate the English ship names from the Americans but after an hour or so of tedious work, the game completely ignored my changes. I added new ships names and even changed the names of the starting ships in the startpos, again...the game ignored my changes and went with the default names.

I suggest you try out the naval editor since the PFM can not open the ship names list but the naval editor can.

Some are a little dubious, but more importantly, some nations draw from a very shallow pool of names. I am kind of sick of capturing ten ships with the same name in a row.

Are you sure? They seem to me to be stored in english_loc.

Really? hmm....cause the file I edited in the past without sucess is located in:

    main/db/ship_names_tables

It has all the ship names in the game and their groups, english, french, greek etc.

I wonder if you have to edit both files in order to get new ship names or edited names
