Need a couple of issues resolving in regards to editing the family tree;
It currently looks like this:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
relative Ioannis Vatatzis, Ireni, Theodoros Laskaris, end
;relative Theodoros Laskaris, Helena, end
relative Theodoros Doukas, Maria Paidianitis, Ioannis Doukas, end
relative Manouil Komnenos, Rosanna, Alexios Komnenos, David Komnenos, end
The problem is Theodoros should act as an adopted son, i.e. he should be keeping his own name (Laskaris) but in-game he appears as a Vatatzis. How can I fix that?
Also, I need to change this:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
character Alexios Komnenos, named character, male, leader, age 45, x 284, y 142, battle_model byzantine_emperor
I need to raise the character's age to 50, but I get a CTD on game start. Similarly:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
character Ioannis Komnenos, named character, male, heir, age 21, x 242, y 118, battle_model byzantine_heir
I need to lower his age to 13, but again, CTD on game start.
Finally, is there a step-by-step guide anywhere for inserting new, married members into a family tree?
relative Ioannis Vatatzis, Ireni, Theodoros Laskaris, end
;relative Theodoros Laskaris, Helena, end
relative Theodoros Doukas, Maria Paidianitis, Ioannis Doukas, end

Theodoros needs a relative line that is placed above that of his father. That way he should keep his name.

A CTD on game start? That cannot happen by raising the age of a character from 45 to 50. Error would be that the campaign won't load. In this case quit the game and check the error log.

This might be the result that minimum age for characters of age is 16 (unless you have modded that).

There is only one step: Give the daughters second names.

Bear with me, I've only tweaked names in regards to family trees...
So am I wanting it to look like this...

I really have no idea what it could be. I just know that when I revert his age back to 45, game loads up just fine

Again, I don't know - there is another son in the family who's in his minority, so I wondering why I can't apply that to this particular character. Is it perhaps because family tree's must begin play with an heir?

I think I've got it, I'll have to report back after giving it a shot.

I am not sure if that would work. I thought of:

This is really strange. Usually errors in descr_strat do not cause CTDs but either simply refusing to load without crash or loading with parts of descr_strat not executed. So, yours was a CTD (the programm crashing to desktop)?

There are two kind of "characters" in descr_strat: Those that are placed on the map on game start and those that are attached to the family tree as childs. The first group needs to be 16 or older, the second group 15 or younger. Characters on the map are listed in descr_strat with their coordinates and traits, the others are listed in the "character_record"s above the relative lines.
When you want Ioannis to be 13 you need to remove him from the map and list him as a character_record. In this case you would also need another heir. But then there would be no guarantee that Ioannis ever becomes heir when he comes of age three years later. So, I would in this case recommend to make him 16.
I think I've got it, I'll have to report back after giving it a shot.
Turns out my history was wrong - I don't need an adopted son in the family anymore!

You're right - I meant I just get thrown back to the menu. I guess I'm too used to saying 'ctd'
Problems with Ioannis and his pop. I tried turning Ioannis into a not-present-on-the-strat-map family member, and it worked...but no-one else showed up
The only character on the strat map and in the family tree was his pop, Alexios. No agents, no named generals, nothing! So, in frustration, I tried again; increased Alexios' age to 50, and lowered Ioannis to 14, but nothing!
A related question now: I want to add a 'unique' named character to the strat map. That is, I want to begin play with a character whose name will never be duplicated by the faction. I'm thinking if the character has the name in descr_strat, and the name is in descr_names, it will work. But I'm also thinking if the name isn't in Names, the engine won't allow it?

In this case quit the game and check the error log, it will tell you what's wrong (I would guess he has a father that is set to young to have a son of 50).

Yes, this is a common thing that indicates that there is a non-fatal error in your set up, that is the game runs with it, but is not able to read the relatives' list to the end. Could you post your entire ERE characters including those on the map and the relatives lists; I am sure I can find out.

No, that's not possible. Every name that appears in descr_start needs to be a valid name for that faction in descr_names, and that way would also be legally for use for later members. Also, every first name can be mixed with every second name later by the engine for new sons etc. This is very problematic when you are dealing with a faction of different ethneticities.

actually you can if you've got a spare / unused faction
put the spare faction in descr_strat as unplayable and dead_until_resurrected
give that faction the unique name you want to use
code your character as
character sub_faction spare_faction, Unique Name, named character, male, heir, age 35, x 285, y 42
similar to the way the slave armies are listed
note he'll end up with portrait and strat model used by the spare_faction not his normal faction, unless you give him specific portraits etc.....
Right, new problem with another descr_strat, both in terms of family tree, and assigning control of a city to another faction.
Current family tree:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
character_record Manuel Palaiologos, male, age 75, dead 25
character_record Helena Palaiologos, female, age 78, alive, never_a_leader
relative Manuel Palaiologos, Helena Palaiologos, Konstantinos Palaiologos, Dimitrios Palaiologos, end
With Konstantinos as faction leader and Dimitrios as heir. Game shows only Konstantinos as alive, no one else shows up on the family tree.
As for the city, I simply cut/pasted Athens from the Venice list and pasted it into Byzantium, like so:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

year_founded 0
population 8000

but the city still shows as being owned by Venice.
Presumably that town had garrison from Venice in it previously - did you remember to move or delete that army? If their army is still in it then it'll show up as owned by them..
If you're trying to put two armies on same location that might be problem with family tree too - where is Dimitrios meant to be on map? and is your log file showing any warnings or errors about any of this?

Yep, the Venetian garrison is still in there. How do I find and delete them in descr_strat?

That's not the problem in this case - Dimitrios is in a different city from Konstantinos!
You need to know which character is the commander of the garrison (start a campaign with Venice). Attention: when that is a family member do not delete him but move the garrison to another spot.

There is ", never_a_leader" missing behind Manuel's record. Not sure if that causes the problem.
