Has anyone ever had a smaller army than the defender Then attacked with catapults to destroy key structure's then retreated . Repeat until you can get a larger force or you are done screwing with the enemy city.

Nope, but in R:TW I did that, but only when necessary. Because you will have to rebuild it once captured.

You can have assassins sabotage the enemies buildings, or a much better option, capture the city, sack it, destroy all the buildings and leave. The enemy will most likely get their city back, it will screw them, and you will get a lot of money.
OOh i did that a lot in my Spain-goes-around-the-world-campaign. Round 1090 I migrated to Holy land (crusade). When mongols came, I wasnt able to defeat them. (Spain sucks against mongols) Then I started the great migration of the second horde. 5 Full stacks left the holy land, went to Greece, sacked EVERY byzantine city destroyed buildings, left. I destroyed Moors, Portugal, England, Scotland by now and Im settling in the UK. Beautiful Campaign *Sniff*

When attacking castles, many times, especially as I very rarely build much artillery; I attack and take out as many towers as ammunition will allow, then withdraw and attack properly on the next turn - I do this by spliting the artillery and several support units away from my main army, attack with the small artillery force, then lay siege with the larger force, to prevent any rebuilding, and next turn recombine my two forces and attack. If it's a huge castle filled to the brim with bad guys, I may do this several times.

Sometimes i do the elephant code(artillery elephants) and take 99 percent of their garrison out then i retreat the elphants then have the other army waiting run through the holes and kill the remaning forces. However i only do this to the to "Roman" Empires. Damn Germans!![]()
