    Default A question about generals and modding

    Righto let's see. I'm working on a small experiment here that I wanted to try. A mod that I'm playing has removed the Family tree for the faction by going into descr_sm_factions.txt and setting the family tree to Teutonic, I changed it back to "yes" and the family tree reappeared again.

    However

    The general has no wife, no sons, no heirs or relatives - where do I add/change/remove this? Would like to know as I want to try a few things here on my own.

    Do you mean your starting generals or emerging ones?
    Relatives of your starting faction leader must be named in the descr_strat.txt.

    That's the example for the egypt aka High Elven faction.
    As you can see your FactionLeader has to be named first.
    Then add all generals you want to add.
    The last line is crucial for the familytree, take notice that you can not have more than 4 sons or daughters for 1 character.
    It is read: FactionLeader, "tab" FactionLeader'sWife, "tab" OldestChild, "tab" SecondOldestChild, "tab" &c., "tab" end

    I meant for existing ones not emerging. I figured it was somewhere in descr_strat.txt. as it seemed logical but I didn't know what set of lines was important except that it was somewhere revolved around my faction leader

    I tried adding a wife called Aglareth (was in the name-list, figured I couldn't take a name that wasn't in the descr_names.txt)

    However here's theproblem: When I enter the game and check the Family tree, my faction leader is not listed as a faction leader but "General", with no spouse and no children/relatives. I believe he has to be given a Faction Leader trait for the family tree to work, correct? If so, where do I change/add this?

    p.s
    None of these changes are made for public use, I am just curious as to how to add a family tree. Not trying to rip off Finarfin's work or make additions for his mod without his permission - again, this is only for my own personal use and fun.

    Right! That's exactly why he's not listed as your FactionLeader and the reason why his wife won't show up, besides what you mentiond about the DN is because you missed to mark her as alive

    Hmm, this is odd. I did all those changes, but whenever I seem to add the Factionleader 1 line to Elendil, I get a few issues:

    1: He's still listed only as a general and not my Faction Leader
    2: He has no heirs, no wife, no relatives
    3: He has no traits whatsoever
    4: His listed heir, Nourinivir (ugh...amazingly retarded name tbh..will have to change that eventually), has no traits either, it seems all traits that are listed behind Factionleader 1 and Factionheir 1 get removed :/

    Really do appriciate your time and help on this Fëanor, hope you can shed some light on this. I am new to this kind of modding, so every bit of info and tips are appriciated

    The general(s) get all their other traits, but not the Faction Leader/Faction heir trait.
    When I open the export_VnVs.txt in the Textfolder, the Factionleader trait is listed here as Faction_leader and Faction heir is listed as Apparent_Heir

    Hence you've to edit the age of Nourinivir and Beleg; or you've to make your Factionleader and his spouse older

    No, those are the trait tresholds. The trait itself is Factionleader and Factionheir

    Try deleting map.rwm. Also try separating the relative names with tab.
    And leave a blank line between the spy line, the character record line and the relative line

    Definately, saw it and changed it right before you posted your example here Let's see if this helps a bit.

    Inquiry:
    There's a script in this mod that sets Isildur as the Faction leader if Elendil dies, and Isildur loses his traits/ancills as the King of Gondor but gains those of the High King of Arnor - does this interfere with my plans of adding a family tree for Arnor that I am trying to accomplish here?

    I still don't understand why the Faction Leader trait won't show, and why it nullifies every other trait...have I forgotten to edit some other file and hence why it nullifies it? Is there some other file that assigns traits to a general/character?

    There are a lot of named characters that are not related to eachother in anyway. If you have a named character I think he must be in the family tree...

    In every faction of the vanilla TA:TW there are some generals (named characters) who are not part of the familytree, which is defined in the relative-line.

    I guess that's why he changed the familytrees to teutonic in the descr_sm_factions.txt in order to make this script work.
    But since your game crashed when using the files edited by me indicates that there are other relations somewhere, which I do not know.
    And actually that means I do have no clue how to help you any further, I suggest to contact Finarfin and ask him why he decided to have Arnor and Gondor without familytrees and how to undo that in his submod without making your game CTD
