    Default Various Other Questions (BI)

Various questions I want to ask:

-How do I rename factions without causing bugs?
-How do I rename units without causing bugs?
-How do I create my own ancillaries?
-How do I give regions to factions (while giving them troops and the same culture as the faction)
-What are the things on the descr_strat.txt files that say things like religious stalin, and sailor napoleon?

The name changes : go to your text folder (inside the 'data' folder) , and there'll be quite some text folders , but you'll want to edit export_units . It contains units in {brackets} on the left side , and normal names on the right . ONLY CHANGE THOSE ON THE RIGHT
-How do I rename factions without causing bugs?
You'll have to edit several files , but seriously , there are many tutorials bout this , like this one :

-How do I create my own ancillaries?
    Squid's tuto : http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=131861

-How do I give regions to factions (while giving them troops and the same culture as the faction)
Just delete and paste the whole settlement entry from one faction to another in descr_strat

-What are the things on the descr_strat.txt files that say things like religious stalin, and sailor napoleon?
    Check some descr_strat tuto's

What KingTheoden means is don't edit anything inside curly brackets (these > { }).
Normally the bracketed names are on the left, are all lower- or all upper-case and never contain spaces. The display names are on the right, have regular sentence capitalization, and will often contain spaces.

Well, you only want to change the names inside the {brackets} if you want to change the internal name of a faction. There are only a few rare circumstances you want to do that, mainly to get around hard-coded things like needing a Slavs faction to have emergent factions. There are a huge amount of files you need to edit in order to do it.

If you only want to change the name of the faction you see in the game, then you do not want to touch the entries in {brackets} at all, and only edit the text you see in the right hand column of the appropriate text files, like so:

    Code:
    {EMT_ROMAN_JULII_ASSASSIN} Julii Assassin
    becomes

    Code:
    {EMT_ROMAN_JULII_ASSASSIN} Gorgon Assassin
You will have to edit the following files in the Data\text folder:

    strat.txt - Contains the victory/defeat messages
shared.txt - Contains the faction names themselves
expanded.txt - Sets the faction names on the selection menus, for agents, settlements, etc... on the Strat Map, as well as in event messages.
    expanded_bi.txt - Does the same.
campaign_descriptions.txt - The descriptions you see when selecting a faction at the beginning of a campaign. Note that there are two descriptions for the Brutii, you must edit the last one.
menu_english.txt - Names in the battle editor and multiplayer.

    Also,
export_units.txt - contains the names and descriptions of every unit
    export_buildings.txt- likewise for buildings
    export_VnVs.txt- traits
    export_ancillaries.txt - and ancillaries

N.B. If you create a new trait and forget to add a description, you will get a crash when trying to view a character with that trait, the same with ancillaries. If you add new buildings and forget to add a description, the game will not even load. Units don't seem to mind however.

One note about SubRosa's list, in 1.5/1.6 expanded.txt is superseded by expanded_bi.txt entirely.
Also expanding on SubRosa, it seems that whenever there are two bracket entries that are identical, the second one (or the last, if more) is used by the game.
