Large problem

It seems that the character I mentioned in my report in the Rome beta thread (if any of you read it, it's the guy who just turned 20 - finished education) has screwed my game up.

I've tried moving him and things, but no luck, still a CTD. So I tried killing him off. With that done, I return to campaign map to find that none of my shortcut keys work properly. The scroll flickers open and closed for about 8 seconds then comes up as long as I hold the key down, same goes for the escape menu.

Also, when I click a town and go tot he army page and want to side scroll across the map, the unit cares highlight from left to right really fast and it drasticly reduces my FPS. Like, seriously low. This never happened to me before, I've treid restarting, reloading etc. Evn tried a new campaign and it's happening there too. Also with my older (I know non compatable, but just to test) Parthia campaigns that it deffinatley wasn't happening on.

Assuming that it was actually this char that has caused it (I've no idea what else could have caused it) ,the appearence of these 'broken' generals seem to be increases, at least on my part.

I haven't been able to reconstruct this bug, I dunno about anyone else. It sounds more like a corruption in the game itself than a bug caused by RS2

There is some important stuff missing, Gez, that we should know. Who sponsered him, and was he nmade a family member? And what was his name? It isn't 'all' that uncommon for RTW to hiccup and create a named character that's got an issue, but we need every BIT of information about every instance of this to make sure it isn't more than an RTW hiccup. There are some rather 'unique' setups for faction named characters in RS2, and they have not been tested much. So we need to keep a watchful eye for this, and post all the information possible. Rome is one of those factions with a rather unique setup. Seleucid is another.

I had a character like that once while playing SPQR - I was fighting in Tarsus against the Ptolemaics, and I conquered the city, and this guy who was the General of the Egyptian garrison in the city suddenly switched sides - i could move him about, even though he was supposed to be dead! however, if i right-clicked to check his profile, instant CTD - he also gave me a CTD at the end of the turn any way. I had him bumped off, and that fixed the problem.

I re installed RS2 with all the updates and started a new campaign fine. But when i tried my old save games on this new instal, instant CTD. I can't tell you any of his traits other than he had just finished his education. He was born into the Maxentius family. Can't tell you any more than that because I can't get to the family tree screen without RTW going mental. So I'll just carry on with a new isntal and new save. Hopefully that should just make it go away.

I would guess that with most updates it's best to start a new campaign. Using old saves with the latest version of games is always a mistake (I think).

In this case, yes. Hopefully, in the future, no. Unless I absolutely have to, I'm not going to make anymore changes than will wreck campaigns until the traits come out.

Gez, the name of that character was indeed important. He was the son of the faction leader...not just a spurious character from nowhere.

@Brusilov - I didn't actually intend on using the old saves, it was just a curiosity thing, just to see what would happen. I know that the last update wasn't compatable

Ok, on a clean re install, fully updated, everything running fine until this guy AGAIN.

Exacly the same happened only this time no strange errors, just the ctd when i right click him. Happens on his 20th bday. When he finishes education.

So I reloaded the game, and killed him off. Another family member was born. I waited for him to finish his studies and what do you know, 20th birthday and finishing education = ctd.

It's gotta be, because it's just happened again, a third time. With a different char.

Could the problem be the kinda "buffer" time the user has to select a career path? Perhaps rtw thinks there should be a new trait straight away instead of a delayed promotion so to speak?

I'm not getting any issue with it. I don't know what to say about this since I cannot make this bug appear in my game. There has NEVER been an issue with the student trait before, and it's been in the game since December without being touched once. So I do not believe it is the trait causing it, especially since only Gez is reporting this problem. NO-ONE should be able to get anywhere in the game if this is a trait bug.

Hmm...well I don't know what it is then...I've got all the updates and it was on 2 clean installs. Fancy uploading the traits files again for me? Perhaps mine are buggered or something.

Sure, it'll have to wait until I'm back from work. This has me truly befuddled because I simply haven't touched the student traits for months - they've never caused a problem before.

That's fine. Yeah, it's got me confused too because like you said I'm the only one with this problem! It's not making sence :S

Could it be that the new update was missing a certain updated file?

I'm at work until 10, but when I get back I'll run some extensive tests and see if my game can repeat the bug. If it doesn't I'll reupload the traits files, but I don't see how that will make a difference considering I should have the same files as you. If there is a bug, then I'm going to cry lol.

It only happens with people who have completed their education. I can't even check what traits they have or age because of the ctd!

Sounds like an incorrect VnV file. Most likely the version in the release is not the most recent one, because I can guarantee that with the last set of files Calvin posted in Traits thread you will not get a CTD from viewing a characters traits.

i got the exact same ctd with the latest update my faction leaders son becomes 20 and ends his edjucation(dont know spelling) and i try to see his traits and it immediatly ctd's without any reason given.i've tried it 3 times and it always happens again
