    Default Event: Dragon

I wonder if it wouldn't be fine to have an event like a spawning dragon? I suggest it to be a very rare event, that has much effect on the trade income and happiness of the province in which the dragon spawns.
Technically it should be possible and work in the same way like the heretics in normal Medieval 2, so that you have to recruit an dragonslayer agent or something like this to get rid of the beast. When the dragonslayer is successfull, the faction leader could get an ancillary like "dragonslayer" (same way as it was with master assassin in Medieval 2). This ancillary should be quite useful due to its effects.
So this is just an idea that came to my mind.

Dragons weren`t that common during the third age to justify such an event, imo.

It would probably work, but i doubt anyone would bother to do it. Only that you would have to make new stat models and there is no "heretic" relgion, only "others" and i dont think that has a negative affect on your settlments.

dragons were uncommon, but not unexistant. in the Third Age, you had Smaug and the nazgul's dragons.

    http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Dragons

you could try something like "Son of Ancalagon".

i might be far off here, but is it completely impossible to make dragons a combat unit? if it wasnt, you could make the dragons for evil, and eagles for good.

i reckon its a long shot, but im just wondering

I'm working on combat Dragons but I'm nowhere near done. They can't fly because it'll be too buggy.

you'd have to make dragons for evil and what for good ?

and call them sons of ancalagon, sounds cool!

since you cant make them fly, i reckon dragons are still nice as ground troops. but the question is, what would be added to the good side, to keep balance?

In The Fellowship of the Ring I 2 The Shadow of the Past, Gandalf tells Frodo that, since the passing of Smaug, '...there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot enough...', so at least some dragons of this kind must have remained on Earth at that time.

but Smaug is dead when the mod starts and the thing the Nazgul are flying on are no real dragons. At least not for me

there ARE dragons in the world. just not as powerful as Smaug, or Ancalagon, but it's not against the lore for dragons to fight.

the Ringwraiths rode upon no dragons, winged/fell beasts, but no dragons. Dragons are far too big to be ridden effectively at any rate.

the only dragons left were cold drakes scattered in the mountains of the north, and its hinted there are some in the far east as well

I liked the idea of the event but I dont know if it can be implemented to work exactly the way you suggested Kettenhund. It would require some strat models and animations and the dragon would have to be like a heretic unit. The dragonslayer would have to be like the priest is in vanilla medieval. The only problem is that assassins can also kill heretics in medieval and it look weird to have a normal assassin able to kill a dragon. Maybe assassins can be edited not to be able to target the "dragons".

My main problem with this idea is the following: It doesn`t add anything to the game at all.

So rare Dragons should spawn? How rare? Too rare and it won`t effect the game at all, too common and it would rape the lore to death.

The engine can`t handle everything- Dragons would have to function like heretics, thus converting the religion (in this case culture) Which.. doesnt make sense. Especially dragons spawning in evil areas are an problem, since those factions are "allied" with dragons.

Priests would have to be replaced with dragonslayers, okey. But here we got another problem: Dragonslayers should be able to fail the mission, or? Well the fail rate should be high, since dragons are dangerous.. But they are also rare and it would be almost impossible to train those slayers.

So.. we`d have an occasional orgy of safe and reload.

At this point the only Dragons left in the world, where the dragons of the north, the cold drakes, which could not use any kind of "Breath Weapon" and could not fly. The only dragons that could fly were smaug and Angalacon, and his breed, and they were all killed at the end of the first age (Except Smaug, who is dead by this time anyway). The Dragons of the North, are more like giant lizards with super strong armour for skin.

the thing is, how can you make The Eagles efficient if they can't fly?

the dragons can work well on the ground, but the eagles cant

you could make 1 man groups for dragons (if you do plan to implement them in combat), make it BIG, i mean, bigger than Mumakil, with bonus attack Vs all kinds of infantry, being its main weakness projectiles.

might sound stupid, but i reckon its not a bad idea

What a thoughtful way to include a beaut flavour event.

Dragons are a fantastic part of the lore and AFAIK were alive and kicking in the TATW period, although as noted mostly away from the action areas.

They were definitely active in game terms (taking settlements, fighting battles) for some centuries up to the period of Hobbit, driving the dwarves out of the Grey Mountains and even the Lonely Mountain.

They caused widespread devastation (lots of black on the map), slew kings and ruined towns (although AFAIK they did not beat high mountains down)

However I am hanging out to see worms in battle.

    Please.
