The commander of Turkish forces in Afghanistan has died in a traffic accident. The interesting thing is after hearing this accident, many afghanis came to Camp Dogan in tears crying after this Nato soldier. He was loved very much by afghanis. He was very good to children and women. While many Nato commanders took security personel,he was able to just walk around afghanis. He was asked many times by other commanders why he was loved so much.Villagers even put Turkish flag in the mosque when he died.

Not really, about two weeks ago a couple of German soldiers died because their vehicle crashed and got upside-down.

We are now at 32(RIP), and I guess most died in similar stupid kind of "accidents".

Turkey should send more men to Afghanistan. Turkey has the largest Army in Europe and is a Muslim country, the presence of more Turkish troops, combat troops, will be a positive thing for this war militarily and politically.

True but Turkey's army is also the guardian of its secularism and at least the command of the army is maybe quite anti-mohammedan even*

Political secularism, not social secularism. The army doesn't have anything against Islam playing a role in people's lives, just with religious influences on state decisions. Turkish commanders still attend prayers for soldiers killed in action, for instance. It's a fine line to walk, but the army has done a fairly good job since the 1920s, IMO.

There is only secularism, no such a thing as social or political secularism, I guess what you would call political secularism is secularism and what you would call social secularism is anti-theism. Secularism means keeping religious affairs out of the state and the state out of religious affairs (Turkey is not very secularist in that respect though)

From what I have heard soldiers women can't wear head scarves and no mosques in and around military bases iirc.

Semantics. I called them what I did for the sake of clarity. Turkey would more correctly be described as a laic country, though, not a secular one, as religion is regulated by the state (to a degree). However, the distinction between this and a theocracy is that the control is only one way (well, ideally).

The military is an instrument of state policy, and thus so are all soldiers. As such, there are some gray areas with regards to the rights of soldiers and their dependents. The military institution is, however, is strictly secular because it has to be, for the sake of equality of service to the state. Surely you can see how dangerous it can be to have religion and military training potentially mingling together. Just look at what happened in Iran in 1979. Overly religious officers refused to defend the state (which is a soldier's duty), and look what the result has been. Radical secularism in the Turkish military is closely tied to the Iranian experience. Prior to 1979, it wasn't quite as extensive (judging from my father's and uncles' experiences). Basically, the military higher-ups were spooked by the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and have been acting accordingly ever since.

    Keep that in mind.

    To whom it may concern

I am a Pakistani, and we have love and affection with people of Turkey since the Caliphate movement to save caliphate in turkey after WW1.Specially we love you when we know that you are passionate muslims like us and you are defending wrongful imposition of secularism on you. This love comes to peak when we know with what love and affection and respect you constructed Mosque of Prophet (pbuh) in your era of Caliphate.

I have listened examples of your kindness and love with people of even non-muslim nations, when your army was allocated by U.N. there. Definitely Afghan would love such a person you told as he was a rare example to them in Allied Army. As Afghani people often protest against evil occupation and acts of Nato and american forces.

Not only those Afghan but i am also sad after hearing such a loss. May Allah rest his soul in paradise. Aameen.

"I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality. It is the only religion which appears to me to possess that assimilating capacity to the changing phase of existence which can make itself appeal to every age. I have studied him - the wonderful man and in my opinion far from being an anti-Christ, he must be called the Saviour of Humanity. I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it the much needed peace and happiness: I have prophesied about the faith of Muhammad that it would be acceptable to the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today." Not sure how popular this sentiment would make you in Turkey.

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive, keep him alive in Islam, and whoever You cause to die, cause him to die with faith.
