Icon1 What is your favourite starting faction and why?

Just curious cos im going to start a new campaign so was wondering which faction i should go for.

My favourite is probably Pontus because their balance of heavy and light cavalry and light and heavy infantry with phalanxes is perfect for my playing stlye (not to mention the awsome chariots!!).

I also enjoy starting with only a couple of territories and building it up from there as i like to think that ive done most of the work!

    Just give me ur thoughts

    Cheers

My personal favorite is The Republic of Rome. I just love to fight with the classical legions and get Rome as the real centre of the world.

But when you have played the romans for a long period, I personally would suggest to try the Greek cities. Very chalanging, because of the long Macedonian spears.

    Just a few ideas..

Any of the smaller empires are fun... I will start campaign with Britons soon simply due to their map position might be a bit more difficult. No way to expand incredibly fast with them cause so isolated.

Greek Cities is way overpowered in my opinion but it is fun to try at least a few turns with them. However so many rebel city have Greek auxilia built as well as Greek Cities sit near the most profitable trade routes... not to mention their army roster is pretty strong.

Pontus, Rome, Iberians have remained my favorites for awhile. I haven't tried Galations yet though... seems different unit roster than Pontus but nearly same start area might be a bit interesting. Bactria might be fun as well, haven't gotten around to using them yet either. Armenia and Parthians are simply stomp factions. Their units so strong if used correctly that I get bored playing them. Have to try and force myself to use the units incorrectly and that is difficult.

the republic of rome is simply my fav faction. classic legionaries, and auxiliaries = very nice =D also, when I think of the roman empire, i think of star wars, which i also like.

hmmm I think i would like to start the Gauls next campaign, because of their historical valour.

mine is bactria because you're so isolated, you have to be careful

I like the isolated factions too because you're not under any immediate pressure to start expanding. For example in my Briton campaign its 248bc and I've only just invaded Gaul, I like to take my time!

I would probably like Bactria but that means facing the Sarmatians and I hate fighting battles against Horse Archers.

Kindom of Pontus,or Gaul can't decide but Pontus units are so wonderfully detailed, and Gauls are animals in the battlefield get's me pumped.

I usually like playing as Rome, but I'll skip them over for this thread. I've come to like the Germanic tribes.

LOTS of Javelins, lots of troops, lots of spears, lots of hard hitting power. Their great weakness is the overall low protection and armor. Playing against missile-centric factions or siege assaults can be very costly if not played right. You have to use the fodder, mobility, and hitting power just right since a straight slugfest as if I was playing Rome would lead to a costly disaster. Their cavalry is alright if you use them right and can hit pretty hard, but their not decisive compared to the infantry. The infantry, especially those cheap spear warbands, are very good at absorbing cavalry charges. Yeah, they hurt, but if set right, they can eventually eat up those expensive cavalry units by attrition. I'm happy to expend 10 cheap warband guys for taking down 1 cataphract.

There was a poll on this a while back. I think Rome won.

I actually like playing as the Seleucids. I am not sure why, but I like having a spread out empire to try and struggle to keep control of.

Also, the Greek Cities, simply because I like the Greeks and Hoplites.

Seleucia for me as well - it's a different challenge trying to hold together a crumbling empire. But when you sort out the economy you've got an amazing set of troop options to go with!

Briton as well since it's my homeland (slightly biased view, but hey, you asked)

Rome - to get the full experience of the mod.

    Briton - it's hard, and i'm a patriot

Spain - better troop spread(as in variety) than the other 'celtic' nations maybe, and quite easy to defend.

each is different but i like them about the same for the different things they allow.

Every time i start my Seleucid campaign. My tactic involve throwing away the east / west of the empire. Those regions have few strategic values, and does not provide a good income. Keeping only the Rich Babylon & Antioch area. Allowing the Bactrians & Galatians to grow faster.

Well, it's a toss up for me. Between the Greek Cities and Carthage. I really enjoy the naval aspect of the game, and like to fight in different theaters across the Med by ship. Facing down Rome in Sicily is great, you have to ensure you can get troops from Africa to Sicily, and try to prevent theirs from doing the same. I also like the power projection offered by the ships, as Carthage I could destroy Egypt fairly easily by outflanking them from the sea. And it gives you the chance to snake any weak cities along the coast. I suppose you could apply this to any nation, but Carthage especially stands out in that it's homeland is nice and secure, being threatened only by Numidia to the west, I've never been invaded by Egypt, they're always too busy with the Seleucids and the rest of the Diadochi. So your ships are free to carry your banner wherever you can reach.

Germans, although I haven't played a proper game with even half of the other factions. I also like Sarmatians for their good cavalry mix but with the earlier updates (3.3 I think?) they seemed pretty weak in comparison.

For the record, this strategy might not work so well in 3.5, since the Seleucids start out with some territory in Transoxiana that's actually quite wealthy. The question then becomes whether to hang onto it or let it fall into enemy hands.

The Sarmatians are a little stronger now, at least economically. There're also more regions on the Black Sea, so picking those up will increase your trade earlier than before.

Well i still find the Romans the most fun and they are the only faction i play regulary. In every game though it gets to the stage where you are either steam rolling everyone or get to the pointon vh when you are just facing stacks and stacks. I usually find conquering the Itlaian penisula and sicily most fun on vh and after that its all easy really.

Ive allways wanted to get into a head long battle with Rome (when i play another faction) with full legions but find the ai doesnt oblige me!

Would it be possible to create a Hotseat campaign for RTR like in Medieval: Total War?

EDIT: How come the quote didn't work?
