    Default RTW and Laptops

Does Rome: Total War not work on laptops? I ask because I installed it last night and installed patches 1.3 and 1.5 and went to play it to get a message saying "Rome: Total War has encountered an unidentified error" or something along those lines. So I uninstalled it today and re-installed it and tried to run it without any patches and I got the same error.'

Is it the fact that I'm running it on a laptop matter?

I've run RTW mods on my laptop without any problems. It was a fairly decent laptop when I bought it several years ago (October 2006). I does have a graphics card as well.

    Inspiron 9400 Core 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2.0 GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB)
    2048MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS
17" UltraSharp Wide Screen WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Display with TrueLife
120GB (5,400 rpm) SATA Hard Drive
    Windows XP

Did your RTW work before you patched it?

Yep, I tried running it before patches today and it didn't work. I'm not entirely sure why it's not working. I've installed RTW on my desktop with not issues using the same set of discs.

    Genuine Intel CPU T2050 1.60Ghz
    512MB of RAM
    nVidia GeForceGo 7300
    80GB HDD
    Windows XP

Not sure what kind of monitor, etc.

Is that specific enough? I didn't buy this laptop, a friend of my Father's gave it to him used, but I think it's two years old as far as I know. It shouldn't be a performance issue as far as I'm aware.

Yes. The main thing to make sure was that the laptop meets the minimum game requirements. I presume all the drivers are up-to-date?

How much of the 80GB is free? I'd suggest a defrag - or at least seeing if one is needed.

I'd suggest having a read through the following thread to get an idea on the sort of things that can be done to make sure the machine is in as good a condition as possible before trying to run RTW: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=100384

It's also an idea to have a look at what windows services are running in the background by using msconfig (it executes from the run dialog box in Windows). I'd look up what each service was on google before stopping it.

You may also want to look at programs such as 'game booster' : http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

Well I reformatted my hard drive two days ago, having updated it with drivers for the graphics card, etc.. Everything is running smooth, with no issues. I'll check out those links and solutions and let you know; thank you very much for the advice, however.
