I upgraded my RTW gold edition to RTR platinum edition by following the download instructions on the RTR website. The map did not change at all and neither did the units or the fractions. Can you help me?

If I were to guess I`d say that it`s one of the following two:
1. you`ve installed RTRPE in a different folder than the one where you have the game installed. For example RTR installs by default in an Activision folder while RTW Gold installs by default in a The Creative Assembly folder. You start the game either via the panel that appears when you insert the DVD or via the original RTW desktop shortcut. Both of these lead to the original game which naturally has not been changed and it looks vanilla.
2. you have installed the modfoldered version of RTRPE, but instead of using the RTRPE desktop shortcut to start the game, you use the old RTW shortcut or double click the game`s executable or use the panels noted above. Since the modfoldered version of RTRPE installs in its own sub-folder it does not overwrite the original game files. The only way to launch this version of RTRPE is via the desktop shortcut it creates. Any other way would launch the vanilla game.
when I installed RTRPE, a new desktop icon was created. I start the program via the new RTRPE icon, but the RTW CD must be installed for the program to begin. Have I done something incorrectly?
Can't it be the problem that you've forgotten to delete the map.rwm file??

RTW Gold has 1 DVD to play (there are two other DVDs for installation and another for BI).
Below is the copy of my RTRPE icon properties info:
Target: "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -show_err
Start in: "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War"
I do not know how to copy an image of my RTW game folder, but its subfolders are: bi, custom, data, miles, preferences, saves, temp and TIC. If you wish to know the contents of any particular subfolder, let me know.
I don`t know what you did, but the target of your RTRPE installer suggest you have installed the non modfodlered version of RTRPE(honestly, you should know which one you`ve chosen and tell us). If so, installing it in the same game folder with TIC is a bad idea.
