Default [Rome] So, I give EU:Rome another chance...

And find out it is not bad in 1.3 version; my Armenian campaign is really enjoyable.

But then Paradox still not fix assassin problem, and it seems AI loves to total war again you without a reason (I have fought Seleucid, Egypt, Rome, Macedon as Carthage alone; but then I still beat them out of crap and conquer half of map).

Good that you can enjoy it

But frankly I'd rather try work out why you can enjoy it than play it

Because the frustration of EUIII when you cannot field 100k army??

In fact, I like EU:Rome's combat system more than EUIII, but then HoI2 has better system than those two.

The real complain I have about Rome is its diplomate system, which is too simplified comparing to EUIII but a lot more complicated than HoI2.

General speaking, Rome is a combination of some of each Paradox series, the reason why most fans dislike it is because it lacks an unique feature to represent itself (EU is colonization, HoI2 is combat, Victoria is economy, Crusaders King is dynasty).

I didn't like how it had only a few competitors for power if you played as someone big.

But if you played with someone small they could do as they wished with you.

Unless you played as like, the Picts, but then you have nothing to do but wait until you can colonize the province next to you

Not really, the trick is how to get a cause belli...

And the most common way is to guarantee everyone's independance, then wait until someone screw up and declare war - works very well for me in my current Rome campaign, which earns me a lot of territory in 30 years.

Yeah, but as the Picts you don't really want to go to war with Rome, or even an alliance of two OPMs

I restart a new game as Rome yesterday, and in year 524 I am the most badass nation with a 23 BB point, whole Italy, Kingdom of Macedon, half of Pontus, every Greek city state save only Crete.

It is so funny to see how I crush Pontus when that small kingdom tries so hard to be another major power - I just cannot help to be evil.

Is this game really that bad?
I was going to buy the Gold edition at my local store the other day. It was priced 19.99 USD. It came with the Vae Victus Expansion as well. I read a lot of reviews and they seemed like either you'll love it or hate it. Of the paradox games I only played Victoria, which I loved, and HOI1 and HOI2, HOI2 I didn't care for so much as I didn't like the "War is movement" gameplay and the seemingly watered down tech tree. I have EU:2 but haven't played it yet.

Well, I say it combines all the "good" features of all Paradox series; colonization of EU, military system of HoI, dynasty role play of Crusaders King, and ecnomical system of Victoria. However, in order to combine all these features many of them are representing in mild way, hence leave no unique feature that Rome can stand up for itself like other series.

In fact, compare with EU, Rome's military system makes much more sense. You probably can argue there is no military in EU at all (hence I find Rome is better).

Bought Gold yesterday and I'm enjoying it so far. I would have gone a different route with the game though. Considering that playing a major should be easier than most paradox games of the past, I would have made the various systems in the game especially economics more complex. It's all mostly watered down especially the map. There is something to be said for simplicity in some cases though.

I bought rome the other week and i'm actually quite enjoying it. I was shocked after all the bad i'd heard about it, but its good fun. My only real gripe is that it just doesnt have the scale of any of the other paradox games. It could do with more provinces and more nations to fill up the big blank sections of map (although i do enjoy the barbarian horde feature). Also i wish they'd lengthened the time-span of the game so you could play as imperial rome instead of just the republic. I'm slowly working out how to mod it to fix things like that though. Everything other than the map seems really easy to mod .

There should be a no time limit mod at the paradox forums if you want to play past the usual end date.
