I merely took his suggestion and applied it to my legionary cohorts.
When I tested this out in the custom battle, I put my legionary cohorts up against armoured hoplites/sacred band (not the spartans because I raised up their stats considerably) in the grassland and huge cities. In every instances the legionnaires clashed through the spears and fought face-to-face with the front rank hoplites.
Even in the urban setting, when I strectched by armoured hoplites as wide as possible so that the flanks were blocked by the buildings. The legionnaires still defeated me in the frontal attack by concentrating the whole cohort onto a single point in my phalanx.
I think this marks the only times in my game that non-elite, non-upgraded infantrymen defeated an elite phalanx unit from the front. The best part is I did all this without boosting the legionnaire's def/attack stats.
I've also made a specialized legionary cohort. The legionary cohort has the same base stats as the vanilla version, except I gave them combat bonuses and improved hidden attribute in the woods.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to make legionary cohorts more versatile in battle?
