    Default Harddrive Advice

Pentuprage talked me into doing some movie editing, and thus I realized that I don't have nearly enough space to do anything effectively.

I'm looking for a cheap but good (oh the oximoron ) harddrive for storage.

Pricegrabber gave me some stuff, but I want to know, how important is access time? Cache? I'm thinking 8 mbs, but some harddrive have 16 mbs, is it worth it?

I'm looking at this harddrive, is it a good choice?

    Hey Sun...
That Seagate HD is a HELLUVA deal for $125. Seagates are second only to Hitachi in quality. As for access times, cache, etc... I wouldn't worry TOO much about it. You're not really doing industrial stuff.
Just look for a SATA drive(the Seagate is), and as big as you can get it.

I like Maxtor drives too. I have a couple and have never had any problems with them.

...and AVOID WESTERN DIGITAL LIKE THE PLAGUE. I've had 4 WD drives go bad in the span of two years. I bought one and the eye went bad, had to RMA it. They sent me another one...read mechanism stuck, RMA'd that one. They sent me another...another bad read mechanism...RMA. Last drive....motor went out(platters wouldn't spin)...went out and bought a couple Maxtors. No more HD problems...

    Drive quality=
    1. Hitachi
    2. Seagate
    3. Maxtor
    4. Anything NOT manufactured by WD
    5. Western Digital

WD's newest series has decent stability, though I've had much greater experiences with Seagate.
Since their new 7200.8 series just came out and their 7200.9s are on the horizon, the solid 7200.7 series is pretty affordable. I run two 160 GB 7100.7s and they cost me underr 100$ a piece.

I do video editing like you do, so I eventually burned through those, I just bought a 400GB 7200.8

Cache doesn't matter to much unless you really stress your HDs. 16mb cache is significant, but only if you have the use. Now 8mb is what's actually needed, don't get jipped with a 2mb cache HD.
