    Icon5 Favorite Western Philosopher

Who is your favorite of the great Western philosophers? Plato for me. I've been reading his works lately, namely The Republic, and some of his shorter dialogues. I find that I can agree with much of his assertions and beliefs. He also essentially invented the term, through "philosophos."

You should make it so that we are able to choose more than one!

For me it's a tie between Machiavelli and Socrates.

I Would go more into it, but no time.

Ayn Rand. Although I find most of her followers incredibly annoying, I must admit I agree with Objectivism myself. But out of that list, Socrates.

Freaking so close between Aquinas, Berkley, and Spinoza. Argh.

Had to side with Berkley for his unique, sexy quirks. Non of them I consider the greatest or most influential though, just personal faves.

    Out of that, Nietzsche.

Instead of stating what is right, what is wrong, and leaving the rest to God, he analyzed the mankind's flaws, and applied them to his philosophies.

Afterall, who doesn't want to be the "Ubermein"?

Goethe - The little I've read about him makes me like him.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

    - Flavius Vegetius Renatus (in Epitoma Rei Militari, ca. 390)

Lol, I think I have heart about'em - sigh, all these sad comedians that have risen from those novels.

I agree with you, reading can be missleading when its unrelated to what has been written else later, not really different from any other "stato di minorità che egli deve imputare a se"*. Therefore, reading Kant but for obscure reasons eluding Wittgenstein may be somehow unsatisfying over the long.

I guess Socrates. I just like his stories (love how he annoys people. ).

Histoire de la Folie à l'Age Classique. And Surveiller et Punir.

Funny well-meant and well-expressed ideology. I am parsing a textbook on dynamic phenomenology as of now, but philosophy is a complement, not a substitute for science. And vice-versa. I know Garb has an intrinsic mistrust for psychiatric nosographies.
