Though it's easier to just unpack them. You must first have M2TW 1.1 or higher installed, then go to M2tw/tools/unpacker and run unpack all
Certain , Can you answer to me the following things?
For that reason there are a lot of unpacked files that we do not editing?
For that it is not possible to to play with the whole unpacked game?
I answer to you, some unpacked files, specially type bin.strins.txt.
When your you modify them in txt, they generate a file bin new, if the original bin (inside in data_pack) is not delete or replace ,the modification it does not work.
Till now nobody has obtained changed effects over engines or settlements.

Well I don't think he wants to mess with settlement or effect files.
For a "regular modder's" needs, unpacking the game is more than enough

and change the texture line seige_catapult.texture for seige_cetapult.texture , and not work. ( game not read modified unpacked mesh)

Only the direct modification in data2_pack obtains the result.

The edition of colours for engines can be useful for some mods. The coloured smoke is cool Maybe some alchemists are creating magic potions inside those houses, hehe. I think fantasy mods can take advantage of such modifications.
