Psychological horror. Splatter horror is just alot of violence and blood, with some guy popping out in front of the camera every couple of minutes to give a cheap scare.

Movies never get me these days so I tend to see it more Mystery and Action as opposed to horror.

I think the only splatter movie that ever really had any potential was the first SAW. And it pains me to say that, because I hate the rest of them. The first one though, it had some uncomfortable scenes.

This is still the only movie I have trouble watching alone. And this scene in particular really chilled me when I first saw it at around age 15. Kubrick was a genius. I also have issues watching 2001: ASO. Kubrick's visual style, whether it be the Shining, or any of his other movies, was completely subliminal. He understood the fears we have ingrained in all of us. He knew how this would effect the viewer, on a subconscious level. And it goes even deeper than that. He often put things in, that you would miss even if you watched the scene, a hundred times over.

When combined with his understanding of sound, and soundtrack, he was the absolute best.

There's only so much gore you can stuff onscreen before it starts to get silly. Psychological horror allows a bit more creativity, and obviously stuff that messes with your head leaves more lasting impressions than watching someone's head blown off.

Psychological Horror is certainly much more effective. Splatters get old after a while, it's just violence, blood and dismemberment. Not very interesting or horrifying.

i like combinations of the two, but cheap scares imo are only appropriate in small doses with correct timing.

Psychological I suppose. Films like The Shining always scare me more even though I know what's going to happen.

    Psychological horror by far.

Gorefests just don't do it for me, they're not scary at all. Most of the time I'm even thinking I could do it better

It's a choice between Saw and The Silence of the Lambs as far as scary goes.

I don't know that any of his films look alike (compare eyes wide shut and barry lyndon) subliminal is not the right word regardless. A film is what you see and hear.

Kubrick read something like 50 books on nuclear warfare in preparation for Dr. Strangelove. I think the kind of detail you are talking about was more for Stanley than us.

OP: I don't think it's a legitimate question, horror is created by the mind through suspense, what you imagine is behind the closed door is infinitely more horrifying than what's really behind it. I saw the supposedly good slasher SAW and I would not recommend it to any mortal. And I'm right, Rear Window is still a great film 50 years later, The Shinning will be a great film in 50 years and in 10 years SAW will be what year was that made? Who directed it? Who starred in it? Still not ringing a bell.

Saw was a rip-off of Seven. A far superior thriller.

You see, Seven was such a fantastic movie because it was able to incorporate both sub genres, psychological, and "splatter".
