Icon5 "Program too big to fit in memory"

    Hi,

I've purchased a downloadable copy of Medieval Total War II (from direct2drive.com). After downloading the 6 GB zip file, I unzipped it and tried to run the included setup file. When I clicked "Allow" on the Vista User Account Control dialog, a command prompt popped up and disappeared. Followed by nothing.

I tried changing the compatibility mode settings, to XP SP2 for instance, but got the same results. Finally I opened a command prompt in Admin mode and browsed to the directory and tried to run it there. The output is listed in the title: "Program too big to fit in memory". Has this problem been encountered before? I searched the forums here and didn't turn up anything.

With regards to the specs on the destination laptop, I meet the minimums (see attached DxDiag.txt). I tried running the setup from within the default partition ("C:") which had 80 GB free.

Does this have anything to do with the Setup.exe being built for pre-vista machines? The "Program too...memory" seems to often happen as a result of this (i.e. http://www.google.com/search?q=%22pr...ient=firefox-a). If so, where can I download a working Setup.exe?

    Thank you in advance,
    Brandon

I have run into corrupted downloads but not this error in XP and the first in Vista.

I did find this on Microsoft's site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315589. See if it helps.

Hi irishron, the article you mentioned seems to refer to applications which have already been installed. I actually haven't even gotten that far, since it's the installer that is giving me the error.

The article does seem to confirm, though, that the Setup.exe is either not built correctly or is corrupt. I'd re-downloaded it before even posting my question last night, so it isn't likely that it was corrupted in the transfer. . .I also find it unlikely, though, that I'm the first Vista person to have encountered this problem, if it is an issue with the build.

Either way I'm still dead in the water. But thanks for your help, my friend.

Yay. I fixed it by unzipping it with a different archiving program than the default Windows one. I used WinRar.

I use Winrar to unzip everything. Microsoft has yet to an unzipper that actually works. Enjoy playing. Thread closed.
