Changing gloss and normal files ??

Hi,I'm trying to change the gloss and normal dds to remove the detail that bleeds through when I re-skin a model.I've done one mod and working on another,and they seem to be ok but try as I might I can't figure out how to amend the gloss and normal files and not get the brown units that turn up when things are wrong.Is it as simple as over-painting them? do I need to open them in a different format?.
Everything I know about modding I've learned since ETW came out, from the tutorials posted on this site, and I'm also new to photo-shop(CS2).
If there is a tutorial then please tell me where, if not then any help will be gratefully received.

There are little on the gloss but if you would use the search function there are several interesting threads in the mtw2 forums, giving a good entry for the normal.dds

Look in ETW Index as well!!
