There is a trend that I have been noticed throughout my brief time on this planet. People have been using words to describe something when that have don't actually mean what they're explaining.
To be more precise, people have been "over exaggerating" reality by using much stronger descriptive words. How does this relate to politics though? When these words are of political nature, the consequences are a cheapening of these words to the point where they lose their meaning.
For example, an old example is the term "Fascist" or "Fascism". It has been used to describe just about any Republican or Right wing politician or group in the last 8 years. It does not take a Harvard education or a degree in Political Science to distinguish between the Republican Party and Mussolini's Blackshirts, or Hitlers National Socialist German Workers’ Party. Yet, many continue to accuse them of Fascism. It is this kind of misuse of words that cheapens the very meaning of them. What will we call the actual fascists of the future or differentiate them from those simply falsely accused of fascism? The same can be said of Communism and Socialism.
Another one that has been getting at me has been the term "Genocide" being thrown about like homicide. If we keep abusing these words, like I've said before, they will begin to lose their meaning and will fade into normal usage. This cheapening of terms has no good side effects at all.
