1.3 and 1.3.1 CTD all the time

Hey,

I hope somebody can pick whats wrong as I at wits end with this game. 1.0 to 1.2 I could play and live with the buggy fleets etc. Ever since the 1.3 came out I can't play for sometimes 1 end turn and other times 5-6 turns. At first with the patch I could still play OK then just CTD just wont stop. Random CTD. Nothing specific. I just can be looking around the map and CTD, go into building window, CTD and so on. I can't do a battle with out a CTD during or straight after which the 1.3.1 was suppose to fix.

I've tried;

Disabling sound card
Older and new Beta drivers
OC CPU and down clocking
Re install game 6 or more times
Complete re install of OS system
Changing sound game options to stereo and so on
Turning off sound all together
Install game on a different partition
Dropping in game graphics right down to lowest settings
Changing the multi thread back from the last patch

It's only this game. Everything else I have runs perfect at max settings. It's prime stable and what ever test I run is stable.

Here is a solution posted by ergie on another thread. Try and see if this works for you.

Ok, I've tried this with promising results:

File "preferences.empire_script.txt" in "C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts" (Windows XP)

Change "multithreaded_model_enabled true;" TO "multithreaded_model_enabled false;"
Change "number_of_threads 0;" TO "number_of_threads 1;"

I've managed to finish two battles without any problem. Never could finish 1 single battle with 1.3 before. Maybe is luck or maybe not. Don't have much time to tests with two sons, so anyone can try and report? Of course if it works, the perfomance will be worse, but in my PC I haven't noticed a big impact anyway.

You know, I should mention. I was having CTD at game start-up and editing that file did the trick. Strangely enough, after exiting the game I reverted the changes in the script file back-- the game worked flawlessly after that! It only freeze up after a custom land battle now.

I've got away so far with around 3 hrs play time and battles both auto resolve and one's I controlled by changing my affinity in the task manager by un ticking all but 0 core. Laggy, but didn't CTD! Able to get through 20 turns opening, closing game and 5 restarts by doing this each time. Hopefully it will let me play again after work.
