Default Clarification needed on unit names.

    Clarification needed on unit names.

I am given to understand that for a mod to have a new units name on-screen you need to include a separate .loc file that includes the new units name. For English speakers that would be creating a new .pack (with the new units name) based on the patch_en.pack.

But it seems that you need to retain all the other information such as the names of the vanilla units , or at least I do.

In a nut shell to give your new unit an on-screen name you can only have one localization.loc file

    Is this true?

You can only have one file set to type "movie," which is what you need to set your modded loc file to. You'll still have have two other loc files in your data folder: one in patch_en.pack and one in local_en.pack. You can also include your modded loc file in with your entire mod pack and set the whole thing to movie.

My own fault for not making it more clear, I have my new units name on screen thats working fine but I seem to need all the other information in the .loc file as well otherwise the name wont appear.

Seems strange to me so I must be doing something wrong.

In fact when you get a chance have a look at the files here and see what is wrong, its driving me nuts and its just the bloody name.

No, you're not doing anything wrong. In order to edit the loc file, you have to include the original + additions. It's a pain in the ass. Your best bet is to have your unit added to applelover's loc compilation and Swiss Halbediers AUM. That way your unit will be compatible with others.

    Rightyo, bit of a bummer.

So that means that every time there is an update to the game that changes the vanilla .loc files you should by right update your own modded .loc because new names could be added etc.

    Hello Modestus, yes you're right.

After the next patch release you should look into your ETW data directory if the "patch_en.pack" (ge,sp,fr) has changed or not.

As you already wrote there could be new added names or fixed texts which are included into the "localisation.loc".

As an example the last patch 1.3 did update these two pack files:
    patch.pack
    + patch_en.pack (ge,sp,fr).

The minor patch 1.3.1 did only update the "Empire.exe" file and did not change the pack files at all.
