    Default Canadian Independence?

Canada is a free nation in concept and truth but in theory it is still a dominion of Britain. Do you think Canada should declare utter independence to the British Crown and become a complete sovereign?

I do. I am a lover of the constitutional monarchy but I don't like the idea of our official name being Dominion of Canada. I also don't like our future King being a foolish playboy. I think that upon his ascension to the throne we should abandone Britain and declare ourselves the COmmonwealth of Canada. What do you fine people think?

My opinion is that having a monarch is no longer needed. We will still be the same country but this is more of a principle thing.

I think when Elizabeth dies, Canada should hold a referendum to see if they want to become a republic.

If I were Canadian I would vote yes in such a case.

Sorry, but are you implying that Prince Charles is a 'foolish playboy'? Where did you get that idea from?

I think he means Harry, who may at some point become monarch.

Dunno if the other one is considered a playboy.

It's unlikely and even if William passes on the throne, Harry will have probably matured considerably by that point.

To be honest, it sure seems it's only a name thing. Don't really see what's the point.

Well if it's still technically a part of Britain's legal system and if they don't want to be, what's stopping them?

Of course then it might make the Quebecois get real pushy and zealous too.

No we arent, we are still technically a Dominion. The Queen still appoints our Senate and approves our Parliament. While these small things are still ceremonius isn't it time we declare independent?

And yes I meant Harry whom will be monarch since Charles is quite old.

how is canada technically a dominion??

i mean i am not even canadian but i know this crap..

    u never heard of this?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_Act,_1982

"According to Section 52 of the Constitution Act, 1982, the Constitution of Canada is the "supreme law of Canada", and any law inconsistent with it is of no force or effect."

how is it a dominion if no law is superior in the land of canada except laws made based on canadian constitution?

The Queen is still Canada's head-of-state, and much of what goes on in Canadian politics and law requires her symbolic approval, which is given by people like the Governor General.

ya symbolic, so? that doesn't mean canada isn't completely sovereign. OP suggests Canada isn't. I disagree.

meh, where the power really happens? Certainly not in Queen's chamber, but in House of Commons in Canada, thus the independence. I don't think it's too hard to understand that. you can even read the canadian constitution.

The Commonwealth is just an association. Saying Canada's not independent because it's in the Commonwealth is like saying the US isn't independent because it's in the UN or the OAS. Preposterous.

And, as I said, the fact that HM the Queen of Canada is also also HM the Queen of the United Kingdom is irrelevant.

Harry is 3rd in line behind, William (brother) and his Father, The Prince of Wales.
