Icon6 Tips for assimilating a conquered peoples

Basically... I need to know which buildings are important to keep and which ones are okay to destroy.

I am fairly sure that auxilliares (did I spell that right?) and temples are a touchy subject. If I understand it correctly, there are advantages to keeping them as well as advantages to getting rid of them.

What about mundane buildings like markets? Is there any reason to, for example, get rid of the Carthaginian market in Carthage and build my own?

I was looking on the regular R:TW forums then realized there might be a lot of differences with R:TR (which, for the record, I absolutely love, and is the only Rome I play).

So basically, what are the pros and cons to the keeping the foreign-built buildings.

    As always, thanks!

IIRC, in RTR the destroying of foreign buildings brings you almoust no posivitve effect on culture penalty. Only after you have upgraded the gouverment building in that settlement you would be able to reduce the culture penalty significantly. Until you didnīt do that you suppose to live with at least 40% ( it coud go down to 35, but iīm not sure ), after you have replaced the foreign buildings by your own. The problem here is the town square, wich actually cannot be "transformed". And you will have to live with a culture penalty of minimum 15%, even if all buildings are of your own culture ( i hope iīm not mistaking here, because i havenīt played RTR PE for a long while, but ExRM instead, but they are actually both based on the same, or similar, engine ).
You should also have all fixes installed to prevent your game from CDT after you have destroyed a foreign auxilla bulding ( concerns only RTR PE, in ExRM itīs fixed ). Btw: you can not use foreign auxillas for your own purposes, but stables and praxis range can and should be kept ( while most still would need auxilla buildings of your own culture to be able to train most of the units, if not all, iirc ).

And what about temples? I seem to get a hit on happiness when if I destroy temples, which makes sense, I suppose.

Also... just to clarify. Does "almost no positive effect on culture penalty" mean that destroying a foreign building will make them more rebel-like or will have basically no effect? Just need to make sure because the "positive" addition to a "penalty" can be interpretted various ways.

Thanks for the quick reply by the way, much appreciated!

Personally I always destroy temples as a matter of course but you might want to wait a few turns as they do provide happiness benefits and I find that you still get a culture hit even after destroying temples.

Interesting that the AI never seem to destroy my auxiliary buildings if they take a settlement that I've built one in. Whereas I always destroy theirs. Thus its easier for me to hold a recaptured settlement as I can begin to produce troops straightaway.

That's really good to hear. So far, I was waiting until I got a few temples of my own built and slowly removing the ones that were already there. Anything that I should definitely *KEEP*?

AFAIK, the foreign temples do affect the culture penalty just the same way other building do. The thing with those temples is, that some cultures build the main temple, wich you canīt upgrade, like "Temple of Horse" one, wich isnīt present in Roman or Carthaginian building tree, but in the greek one ( Nike ). So you should definetly destroy those major temples you wonīt be able to upgrade. On the other hand, there are temples like Jupiter or Saturn, wich provide law bonus ( very helpfull for provinces far away from home, since law reduced a corruption factor caused by the distance to your capital ). Those temples also have quite good effects on your gouverneurs, giving them good traits and ancillaries, while "Temple of Fun" are quite awfull for any FM, who would gouvern the city, because he will end up with terrible traits like "slaughtfull", "minion", "drunkard" etc.
"Temple of War" like Mars, provide experienced troops after youīve built the fourth tier, and "Temple of Trade" like Mercurius will definetly make your gouverneur "master trader", but also "cheapskate", "financially irregular", give him "expensive tastes" etc.
And "Temple of Farming" will make your governeur an agriculturist in short time and this will affect the growth of the settlement very strong ( +1.5% growth, while the gouverneur can be then moved somewhere else to speed up the growth of other provinces ).
    So itīs your choice

Okay, so pretty much what I thought. Investigate the effects of the buildings and go from there, which is what I've been doing. Thanks for the in-depth clarification tho. Much appreciated.
