    Default Skirmishers

Is it just me or do they for some reason count themselves as melee and not missile troops thus making formations very annoying to use when skirmishers are around? (Because they position themselves in the front like melee, and not in the back like archers.)

What do you mean? Archers are also positioned on the front of the AI's line too.

I mean if I use the formation that puts melee infront and missile behind all the skirmishers would end up alongside the melee. Maybe that's how it should be but why are light elven ARCHERS, sindar ARCHERS, sentinels of the woodland realm etc all skirmishers? Not to mention isengards crossbowmen unit. It's all weird and messes up formations. For me skirmishers are for instance light infantry javelinmen. Not elven archers or isengards crossbowmen. If I for instance have 2 forest wardens and 4 units of light elven archers it doesn't matter what formation I try to use. Like; red, blue, green (melee, missile, cavalry) or blue, red, green (missile, melee, cavalry) they all end up standing in 1 line, because the LEA are labaled skirmishers when they are without a doubt, missile troops.

I mean skirmishers in all their glory but it seems so many units have been labeled skirmishers when they should be missile troops.

    P.S.
I use rr+rc lore edition nothing else, so this should be how vanilla TATW 1.1 is...

It is intentional. Skirmishers are positioned in front of the main melee line for direct fire at enemy units. They will skirmish back when the enemy get too close. Missile troops are positioned to the rear. They use a completely different animation set, shooting rate, formation spacing and accuracy level.

That's what I thought, but isn't it a little weird that a generals bodyguard (sindar archers) are skirmishers?? Along with some other units...

PB classified them as skirmishers in RC on purpose but I can't remember what that purpose was exactly. But they still function as archers and that's how you're supposed to use them.

Sindar bodyguards aren't the only ones, almost all archers in RC are designated as skirmishers.

I found this post of his:

    * 'Skirmish' units shoot more slowly but with better accuracy, over direct sights (ie a shorter range). Foot skirmishers are the most accurate archer units
-Horse archers shoot faster. HA are likewise divided into 'Skirmish' and 'Missile' types. Skirmish HA are typically lighter and faster units and usually shoot from very close range
