    Default Campaign Battle Crashes

    Help! -

Installed TATW all ok and looks immense. Started playing and when i went to fight my first battle on the battle map it crashed to my desk top with the error message "Medieval 2 has encountered an error and will now close".

I run on widows vista and have tried to uninstall and re install everything without success.

Although when i re-installed the games i was still able to continue my previous campaigns. ??!! Are saved campaign games saved in a seperate location??

Maybe this is why it still crashes?

Any help to resolve this problem would be appreciated, as really want to do my own battles on the battle maps.

    Cheers

    Do the follwing:

    1. De-install Third Age
    2. De-install Medieval 2
    3. Install Medieval 2
    3. Install Patch for Medieval 2
    3. Install Third Age
    3. Install Third Age Patch (1.1)

De-install with Advanced Software-Manager in Systemconfig.

Did you unpack your M2TW folder? If you did delete the 2 files the unpacker readme tells you to. That's how I fixed it last time this happened.

Was your first battle a siege? That can also cause crashes.

    XP: C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\tools\unpacker\
    Vista: C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\tools\unpacker\

The unpacker.exe and the unpacker.bat are in that folder. One of them will work. You also need to copy these 2 .dll files into the unpacker folder before unpacking:

    msvcr71.dll
    msvcp71.dll

Are you talking about the .dll files. They need to be in the unpacker folder or it won't work.
You can find the 2 .dll files in your Medieval II Total War folder:

    C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\

The unpacker takes a long time to unpack everything so be patient.

I too have the same problem, I started a campaign as soon as i installed. Installation goes as followed:
MDTW2 - just default install, played for months before next install
MDTW2 Expansion - havnt even played, just installed for mod (default install)
TATW mod part 1 then part 2 - all default etc
    TATW patch 1.1
    TATW patch 1.2
Then went directly into game and started a campaign as the north men faction (cant recall name, aragorn etc.)
Built up army and assualted the town directly east, the game crashed every time I tried to run the assault myself until I eventually auto-assaulted. I continued the game hoping the crash wouldnt. It did, I've attempted to assault 3 other towns, it crashes on all of the assaults and gives the same error that the opening post declares.

I can play custom battles fine..

PLEASE help, I really, really, really want to play XD Amazing game btw. I dont know anything about the above described unpacker etc. If you know how to resolve the problem then please give the simplest but most detailed response possible to help me and all the other people with the same problem.

    Cheers,
    HM

EDIT: I have tried changing the graphics setting from highest (which I had it on) to lowest, and changed the audio controller. All to no avail.

EDIT2: And I am running XP. Thus this must expand over all OS's as the OP was running Vista I believe.

I don't know what your problem is but I have another unrelated crashing problem so I just want to convey a shared feeling of frustration. You're not alone!

Problem seems to be on the 1.2 patch, on some site it misreads an idx, so when you play a battle, or a custom battle, the game crashes.
