Icon4 Rome: Total War won't start

I don't know what is happening, but I've searched all of the Internets for the solution; nothing came up.

I just recently installed RTW on my computer (OS is 64 bit Vista), and attempted to finally play it. But, what good are computers without problems? I got an error about mss32.dll missing, so I downloaded it separately and put it in the Rome file. So far so good, the error is gone, the little splash screen comes up with the text "Rome: Total War" and the soldiers in a line. It looked as if that was the fix, but no. The screen dissapeared after a while, and nothing else happened, and the *Whirrr*ing sound from my disk drive stopped. No game appeared.

I don't know what is wrong. I tried running it in Compatabilty Mode, but same results. Tried re-installing it (twice), no cigar. I updated my drivers (card is Nvidia 8800 GTS), still nothing. I looked all over Google for an answer, but all threads seem to go cold after someone says "I did what you said, but it didn't work", so no answers there. I also searched these forums, but I mainly got threads about Obama.

Long story short: The game won't run after the small "loading" splash screen appears, and the computer provides new error. What is wrong?

Where did you get your RTW from?

What have you done with UAC on your Vista install? Have a read of this if you don't know what UAC is (first and last links in the first post in this thread): http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=167821

I turned UAC off, and I got both copies of RTW from a local Target some years ago (My brother bought one too for multiplayer).

Well, I seemed to fix the problem. For future reference, I'll post what I did.

I downloaded the latest patch, got Miles Sound Tools and Winamp. I took the mss32.dll from Miles Sound Tools and placed it in both WINDOWS/System32, the Rome/Miles folder, and the Rome folder. I then completely uninstalled Rome (Not Repair!) and reinstalled it. After attempting to run it, I gave me a brief error about not having Directx 9. I ran a Dxdiag, found nothing wrong, and ran it again with success.

    Thanks for you help!
