    Default Gaining Chevrons

Just a question out of curiousity.
Why do soldiers gain chevrons in campaign mode, after fighting a battle (in which they did not gain chevrons)?

And because this is my first post at the forum I would like to take this possibility to say hi.
    Well then: hi!

    Hi.

There are a few factors involved in gaining chevrons. Kills, number of men in the unit, whether the kills were routing or not, and number of battles fought. Sometimes, when the unit is very close to gaining a chevron, just increasing the last factor, number of battles fought, can be enough to bump it up to the next chevron.

Ah so the number of battles fought gets calculated after the battle statistics screen.
Sounds reasonable, thanks for the answer Scutarii

On a side note, once you do have a serious amount of chevrons say 3 silver it has been my experience that it becomes easier to lose 1 chevron through losses and retraining so where possible keep casualties low to avoid this. Some of my good hoplites went to 3 silver back to 2 and repeated this several times as a result.

usually it is the kills. My SRGs gain a lot of chevrons in bridge battles

Also, chevrons are a statistic for solders individually, not just a unit. So you can gain and lose chevrons by merging units.

in my experience I lose chevrons in the short run by merging, but they probably will build up faster than retraining as you're taking men who have already seen battle instead of from the provinces- where I lose everything, i think. Usually, at least. Today though I had a unit of 7 men foot companion have 3 chevrons even after retraining. I suppose that unit had a LOT of kills waiting for my larger barracks to be built. in fact, I guarantee that they probably were in every major battle when I was fighting the greeks and celts. Intense times. Now it's on its way to dealing with germans after this retraining.

I wouldn't want to be one of those soldiers.

Welcome to the Forums!!! Another thing about each experiance chevron is that it raises the attack and defense values of the unit by 1 for each chevron. Its kinda cool to follow a unit through your campaign to see how much experiance and chevrons it can gain. Lol, just remeber to retrain your unit so you dont end up with only 7 men left.
