    Default Something I've Always Wondered...

Just how do General units get 'restocked' with men?

Of course, I've noticed it just seems to happen over time, but I've never understood how exactly. By what algorithm or rules does it work? Is there any difference if you leave the unit in a city or in the country?

Also, why do some Generals get more men in the unit? Of course I've noticed it has something to do with the influence or ranking of the general, but again, by what rules exactly does that work?

Right now in XGM, I've got a surplus of Generals and I'm fighting a lot of battles... I'm behind the enemy in military output, and I need to utilize these generals as best I can. If there's any way I can get them to restock faster...

There's no way to restock faster. There is a method as to how they restock (how fast), but I can't remember off the top of my head.

For the second question, the two factors are influence, and more importantly personal security. The more personal security traits the general has, the more bodyguards. Influence as well, but not quite so much. Its something like 1 or 2 bodyguards per 3 laurel wreath, but you get at least 2 per personal security (I had a guy come of age with a trait giving something like -8 personal security, can't remember which mod, but he had 8 bodyguards. Ouch.)

A sneaky trick is to move ancillaries with a personal security bonus between generals. The ancillary will boost the character's bodyguard, but it will not decrease when the ancillary is removed (only when the unit actually takes losses in battle). So swap your bodyguards around between generals.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that sticking the generals in cities makes the numbers restock faster. I don't know if that's true, as I've never paid much attention to this before.

I believe that a general in a city will have the maximum bodyguard number on the next turn, while in the field it takes longer.

Expand your borders, a mod based on XGM 5.

Yesterday I attacked a generals unit until only the general was left (and he got away). After their defeat he retreated into the nearest city, where he regained 23 bodyguards the next turn (he started with 24 in the battle).

I've never paid much attention to it when a general only lost a few units. But I guess it's the same thing.

In battles I usually try to take out the general then just leave his unit alone because it won't retrain after the battle which is opposite to having just the general running away from the battle where he will be able to run away.

I think that it gives the bodygaurd "restocking" algoritim in the RTW guide in the TWC Scriptorium. Things that affect a generals bodygaurd size are personal security traits and ancillaries. There is a formula as to how size is determined and how loses are replaced.
