    Default Wrong animation/Missing Weapons

I am currently in the process of modding my RTW game. I am adding a few units (Roman Slingers, German Mercenaries) and am having problems creating a Galatian Mercenary unit. I want them to be a javelin(pre-charge)-throwing swordsmen unit. I have modded all the correct files, but the unit appears to have no weapon. When they line up to throw their javelins, they will sometimes stand their with nothing, much like an old statue, or they will hold their swords. Is there a way to fix this without any picutre modding (I have no image editing software and do not possess the capabilities to aquire one)?
Do I need to post the sections I edited? If so, just tell me which files, and I will gladly do so. I really would like this unit to work.

Um, well does the model actually have the correct primary/secondary weapon to start with?

Not all models support a thrown-weapon. And some support only two weapons.

I remember I made some experiments to create a hoplite with some kind of pilum, but the model (the .cas files, not the entry in DMB) supported only the spear, and it resulted with the hoplites handing their spears (which were aimed backwards), but the projectiles fired towards the enemy were pila.
And reverse, once I took a barbarian unit (I think in Roma Surrectum) whose .cas models used two weapons (javelin and sword), I wanted to make it melee only, but before charging the enemy they stopped in position to throw the javelins, threw nothing, and then charged.

You will have to either edit the unit's .cas files in 3ds Max to add the javelin, and rename the sword to "secondary weapon", or use a different model that already has a javelin/sword combination. You might find the scutarii model ok for what you are doing. But if you do the latter you will probably have to move parts of your texture file around in order for them to show up in the right places on the model.

Hm. As I said, I have no way to modify any image-related files. All I can change is text. Is this possible? If so, what files do I need to change?

You cannot do it purely through text editing, image and/or model editing is required. Why can't you download GIMP or Paint.Net and make the necessary changes?

Surprisingly, I was able to download GIMP. I say surprisingly because my computer has an annoying habit of refusig to do simple tasks. Which files do I need make changes to? Thank you all for your help.

EDIT: I cannot open any of my model files with GIMP. Is there a reason for this?

You will also need 3ds Max, and vercingetorix's .cas plugin for it. Which is not cheap or easy to use. Although there are plenty of tutorials in the Tutorials forum. Post your .cas files and texture file on the forum or email them to me at subrosa_florens@comcast.net and I will be glad to add your javelin for you.

To do this, you need the texture file from data/models_unit (which doesn't seem to be there...) and what other files? I'm sorry, I just am very new to this.

If you are using the vanilla textures, then they are in your game's pack files. You will have to unpack them to get at them. However, if it is a vanilla game file you can just tell me the name and I can it myself.

Likewise, the .cas files are the ones listed in the model lines of the unit's Descr_Model_Battle entry. Again, if these are vanilla files then just tell me the names and I can get them from my own copy of the vanilla game.

If you look over in the Tutorials section you will find complete tutorials on how to create units, as well as very specific ones on the Descr_Model_Battle.txt file, which is what tells the game which models, textures, and animations for every unit in the game.

I have modified the DMB and EDU files, but no image files. Both of these files for adding a Roman Slinger and German Mercenary unit, as well as changing faction ownership. I am using the "warband_sword_gaul" model for my Galatian Mercenary unit, though I created a second entry (warband_sword_gaul2) to prevent the regular swordsmen from having a javelin. It uses the same texture, sprite, etc. as the original, but has the "fs_javelinman" skeleton.
Would it also be possible to add a helmet to the unit? Or would that take an undue amount of time? It isn't necassary, but it would be nice. The Chosen Swordsmen helmet is the one I would like. Again, this is just a feature I would like, but it is not super-important.

Okay, done. I have attached the files onto this post. I renamed the .cas files and texture file by adding a number 2 onto the end of them. So you will have to update the DMB entries to reflect the new file names.

Edit: I forgot the helmet. You can open the texture file of a unit whose helmeted head you like, and just copy the head and paste it into this texture file. Just make sure the dimensions match and it is lined up to fit exactly in the same place. To make a really proper helmet you need to either use a model with one to begin with, or alter the model to create the outward bulge of a helmet over someone's skull.

    Thank you very much, Subrosa!
EDIT: I ran into some problems. I gave you the wrong file name. I got pretty anxious for a while, but I got it working, and it works great. Again, thank you!
