    Default Ancillary Items = Crash

    Well i started making 7 legate ancillaries for The First Triumvirate mod and well 2 things usually go wrong even though i followed a guide carefully...

    1. if i edit descr_strat to make a family member have the ancillary, it doesn't save with it
    2. if i try the give_ancillary console command, it crashes as soon as i hit it

    Im new at this so please explain it well.

    The first may be if you are using Vista, as it prevents you from editing files within your Program Files folder. Turn off UAC and see if that changes anything.

    The second sounds like a problem with the ancillary code. Can you post your code? Maybe the problem will stick out.

    First, it is best to add things like ancillaries, traits, units, etc... one at a time. That makes it a lot easier to figure out what is causing a bug. I suggest you remove them all, then add them in one by one, testing the game after every time to see which one is the problem.

    In any case, I would take out the Unique line in the legate_of_tenth entry. You can make ancillaries unique by adding this line in the trigger:

    I also see you have a typo in the legate_of_secenth_desc entry.

    Are you receiving an error message when the game crashes? If you are not, are you using the -show_err command line switch?

    Alright i deleted all of them exept for legate_of_tenth and the same thing happened

    i also do not receive errors because as soon as i add the ancillary in console command it ctds... plus when i enter -show_err it doesn't recognize the campaign

    so in the trigger for legate of tenth i would put
    and not WorldwideAncillaryExists legate_of_tenth

    im a noob...

    What are you using for the description code in Data\Text\export_ancillaries.txt?

    It looks like the Unique line in the code is not the problem. I see they are using it in the vanilla game too.

    Not having the entry in export_ancillaries.txt was probably causing your crash. Is it working now?

    thank you thank you thank you!

    Alright this is what i plan to do:
    Copy the same thing for each of the legate ancillaries but change the number
    change the image
    edit descr_strat and put the ancillary in each charachter

    Is that possible?

    What you posted above is only part of the code required. Errorless CTD's with traits/ancillaries are 99.99% of the time caused by mistakes in export_VnVs.txt/export_ancillaries.txt files respectively. If you click the bottom link in my sig, you'll see a thread for a tool. It's a trait/ancillary validator run it against your changes.

    Ok one more problem...

    My ancillaries are getting switched. I gave Julius Caesar the 10th retinue and he lost it when i reloaded the campaign.
    Then Publius Crassus had his 7th ancillary switched to a 6th ancillary...

    then whenever i quit i get some message of something like
    error in section () line ()
    ancillary is unreadable

    I have seen this kind of thing before. The game cannot read one ancillary, and it gets all the following ones mixed up, thinking each is the one above it.

    Make note of the line it says is having the problem, then use a text editor like Notepad++ (google it, it is a free download) to open the file. It will show you the line numbers, so you can go to that specific line to see what is wrong.

    Could you post a screen of the exact error and the code around the line it's complaining about? That way I can add into my traits/ancillaries guide.

    There is probably a problem with the entry, an extra or missing character somewhere.

    Expand your borders, a mod based on XGM 5.

    I will try this too.

    Also i suppose that the 10th ancillary is the one causing problems...

    it was like folder 40
    line 5,400

    also @ squid... for some reason fraps wont take a picture of it...

    Edit # 2:
    Did a test only adding the tenth ancillary...






    It looked fine but the message came back when i quit out of the program. Fraps wont take a screenshot of it either

    Don't use fraps, before closing the error box press print screen then open paint (start Menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Paint) then paste using the paste method of choice (i.e. Edit->Paste, Ctrl-V, Right-Click+Paste, etc) then save it to a jpg file.
