ASEAN - would it become next EU??

Since someone mentions a Far East Union, I would give a more realistic question about another region organization that most people do not know well.

ASEAN, or Association of South-East Asian Nations, is an organization for all South-East Asia countries to solve their own problems and promote economical and social cooperation in that region. Do you think ASEAN would develop into an EU like organization in the near future??

I hardly think so. The EU is a fruit of its time, and mindsets have changed.

I wish ASEAN would turn into a EU. However, the economic equality in the region isnt very close like in Western Europe. Singapore and Malaysia wouldnt want their countries to babysit the rest of the members. LOLZ!

Na, Malaysia has its own political and social trouble to take care with (and those are big problems); not to mention Indonnesia would never allow neither Singapore or Malaysia to be the leader...

The economical power of ASEAN is rather not the problem; the problem is how closely operates between all its members states, which from my view the operational level is enough to be as a group.

I should hardly think so! European "cultural unity" is a fallacy, and a dirty one at that! And on the economic aspect, one need only need look at the eastern to countries to see the imbalance.

I could see a united defense treaty to keep china in check as the US becomes more and more irrelevant in the eastern pacific, but Asia is a long way away from confederacy.

We call that the EU except that it's more a Franco-German Union and the capital is at Brussels.

but back on topic itll be a long way before the ASEAN could really get going
the EU worked because its founding members were all reasnobly financialy similiar
ASEAN is too much of a variety hence would be no benefit to the wealthier nations
they pull out and were just left with the weaker poor countries.

Never. Though they loooooooove to dream about it, unity blah blah. Specially in Summits. But meh, they're too regionalistic to care about each other.

Its actually one of the founding members. But of course since we go along with almost everybody else around here we rarely take in some flak. So we go undetected, aside from the random "ZOMG!!! ISLAMIC REBELS KIDNAPPED BLA blAH. Or ZOMG THE MAOIST REBELS BLEW OUT A FRIGGIN CELL SITE IN SOME RANDOM GODDAM MOUNTAIN SIDE!! OH NOES!! ZEE TET OFFENSIVE IS IMMINENT."

Strange, it seems ASEAN is more a duel place between Malaysia and Indonnesia, yet none of them cannot deny that the leadership is Singapore, despite they are unwilling to admit that.

Then comes the trouble maker Burma, which ASEAN has to held Summit every time when Burma screw up.
