Wow, boyscouts has changed. When I was a boy all we did for punishment was put a dead badgerpoopon it in this jerks sleeping bag. But that was funny.
One time when I smuggled a massive bag of chocolate I was forced to eat the whole bag in one sitting (not as fun as you might think).

Kidnapping was very common too, but that's initiation rather than punishment.

Drinking piss is far from the worst punishment, there are rumours of circumcision, ritual tatooing/scarring, rapes, mild water torture, placed in extreme survival situations, gutting herring inmy opinion is worse than drinking piss.

Article doesn't give much context but since the others were put in jail for it sounds like the kid forced to drink urine was a total douche. The 21yr old was stupid to get himself involved but this is pretty ridiculous. The question of drinking urine does illicit a pretty strong response but urine is fairly harmless and no one shoul go to jail for that. If the 21yr old assaulted or subdued the kid pretty bad maybe that's the criminal part but this article is still to vague on the details to draw better conclusions.

Without knowing how long the derogatory statements were going on for I have a hard time believing it's worth it for a boy to be kidnapped and forced to drink human waste. Even if the target of the boy's insults was retarded it would still be better to go to a scout master or counselor.

No. My experience with the Boy Scounts was far from constructive but it does offer a chance for a boy to try things on his own away from the familiar. Not only do they beat you over the head with safety, they also teach you basic survival skills. All come in handy at one time or the other.

The camp counselors and scout leaders are there at the camp as authorities so the boys won't take justice into their own hands. If you've ever been in Boy Scouts you should know that there are many safe, legal, and much less humiliating ways of being punished that also serve a psychological purpose. There's always something to do at a camp, even more at a summer camp, and many of those things are not fun.
