Having now played IJ3 for several addictive days, I would like to launch a little online tournament.
I propose therefore to host the Battle of the Incultum Ferrum, or 'Iron Desert' (forgive my clumsy Latin!).
This will be a 2v2 or preferably a 3v3 player wargame pitting Julian's Romans against (yes you guessed it) Shapur's Persians.
I want to stage a hypothetical confrontation between elements of Roman and Persian troops deep in a desolate desert - hence the title - which echoes in parts Carrhae.
We can envisage something as follows:
In the demoralising retreat from Ctesiphon, elements of the Roman rearguard are cut-off and forced to shift for themselves in hostile terrain while attempting to make contact with the main body under Julian. A shadowy Persian force is harassing them and on the morning of the second day, attempts a full-scale assault with the intention to massacre the stragglers.
SET-UP:
Each Roman player will have 15,000 denarii or solidii if you prefer to spend on whatever troops you wish with the proviso that equites make up no more than 20% of ALL combined Roman units.
Battle Objectives: successfully defend against any and all Persian assaults until the Persians retire from the field of battle.
Each Persian player will have 20,000 denarii or Persian currency equivalent (?) to spend as desired and may field no less than 50% mounted units and with at least 2 units per player of Elephants.
Battle Objectives: annihilate the Roman dogs for the glory of Shapur!
This will thus be a defensive battle for the Romans and an aggressive one for the Persians. The high cavalry and elephant contingent can be explained due to the harassing nature of the Perisan tactics where infantry would only slow them down
The precise map has already been chosen but I will name it only on the day to keep tacticians guessing.
The Romans may field artillery if desired given they are retreating from an invasion campaign.
Persians may not.
We will set up using Hamachi as in previous online tournaments. Anyone unsure about how to set that up - post here and I will tell you how to do it!
Unit sizes Large to reduce potential lag, I think.
As before, first players to sign up here may choose sides as follows:
ROMAN LEFT - Antiochos VII Sidetes
ROMAN CENTRE - Julianus Flavius
ROMAN RIGHT - Juvenal
PERSIAN LEFT - Julianus Heraclius
PERSIAN CENTRE - Dougie J
PERSIAN RIGHT - SeniorBatavianHorse
May the Gods favour those poor souls lost in the heat of the Iron Desert!
