Now I've watched South Park pretty much since it started and I think it's a great show that has given me many laughs over the years.

When Family Guy came around I started watching that and it also made me laugh my balls off.

As you know South Park then made 2 episodes where they ripped on Family Guy. Also in interviews they would express their hate of the show.

Their criticism is that Family Guy constantly detracts from the story with random jokes. That it is poorly written etc...

Personally I think a show that has been full of fart jokes (Terrence and Philip anyone?) and a flying Christmas poop should be the last to criticize family guy for making "cheap" jokes.

"not sticking with their main storyline", honestly who gives a about that? If Family Guy chooses to make a funny show without addressing political issues in every episode then that's neither better or worse than what SP does... it's just different.

When South Park was new the "purists" and elitists of that time were ripping on their show too. Calling it cheap etc, and now the creators of South Park have become the same type of snobs that they once resented.

Attacking them with weak and hypocritical arguments just because Family Guy is gaining on them in terms of popularity made me think less of Trey and Matt. I still like South Park, but I did lose some respect for them.

They're simply different, like two bands. Theres no such thing as a pure and perfect joke or comedy style so I dont care. Sometimes I wanna watch South Park, sometimes I wanna watch Family Guy. The only real difference is I respect South Park more, but sometimes (like on their latest couple seasons) they've been cutting on the jokes too much to make a point.

I like South Park much more than Family Guy. I think Family guy is amusing, but South Park makes me laugh much more, and their rip on Family Guy was hilarious. The best part was they managed to both rip on Family Guy as well as make a point about showing pictures of Mohamed and the Muslim reaction.

Both are funny in different ways. No better, no worse.
I've watched both since the beginning.

I love both shows, and I loved the Cartoon wars episode. It's just different types of humor, while SP one is more charged with social issues, the other one is more random.

Yeah South Park even poked fun at themselves in that episode "Cartoon Wars" about how Family Guy "isn't up its own ass with messages" (quoting from the show).

Cartoons can have serious social commentary or just be fun.

South Park is genius - Family Guy is crap. Family Guy just isn't funny, it has a few moments (all of which involve that darling little child) but South Park just wipes the floor with it in every way that matters.

It's all a matter of perspective, of course, but I like a bit of a derangement in my commedy, and South Park ticks all the boxes for me.

familly guy is good as long as peter griffin isn't on screen, I actually get annoyed by that character's stupidity and well everything about him, I don't know why, I love the baby in familly guy tough! But that Peter griffin character is so lame, I allways feel like punching someone or destroying something when he's on screen, they mannaged to do a scéne in the new night at the museum movie that seemed like a copy of his style and stupidity, drove me crazy.

South park is great as long as terrance and philip and the christmas turd aren't in it

The christmas turd was mostly early south park, which was frankly much more stupid humor. Now its complex stupid humor.

I've watched quite a few episodes of both. I'd say South Park is more satirical humor, while Family Guy is more random humor. Both have clear political preferences, but it seems like Family Guy has grown more aggressive in this respect, especially in the current season. For example, the Family Guy episode close to the presidential election last November had German Nazis wearing McCain/Palin campaign pins on their uniforms. The South Park episode of around the same time satirized the reactions of both Republicans (portrayed as suicidal over the Obama victory) and Democrats (portrayed as partying recklessly and excessively), while attacking neither McCain nor Obama. But then again, I consider myself to be a centrist at least on the American political scale, so maybe I appreciate an attempt at equality more than others.

Anyways, Family Guy is a good laugh, and especially was in the earlier seasons. But random jokes get boring after a while, and South Park often supplies more substance. Of course there's still crude humor, probably cruder than Family Guy, but if you can get past that you can determine the thought-provoking broader theme of (nearly) every episode.

That's just my opinion. I'm not going to defend South Park beyond this post because I'm not a fanboy, so feel free to refute my points.

I think Southpark uses crude humor. Yes. But it uses it to make a point, and make it funny at the same time. They bash my ideas sometimes, but I laugh anyway.

The creators said "I hate conservatives, but I ing hate liberals"

so they're ok in my book.

I've noticed that no matter what, any comedy show that starts off pretty random eventually becomes too political/serious about the storyline. They always fall in love with their own story too much. Scrubs is a big troublemaker in that regard, while South Park is more about the point/politics than the overlying story (The only aspect of the plotline that sticks in the show is when Kenny finally actually died)

i can see where the SP lads are coming from for sure. half of a family guy episode is filled with completely irrelevant, random scenes - sometimes going on for far too long.

Family guy has some hilarious episodes and some extremely bad ones; just as every other tv show does, including south park (man when watching some of the ollllld ones its just poor....)

south park from like season 10 onwards i think are mostly fantastic, and usually have some underlying issue within them (that isnt always political)

Both shows have randomness, jokes, and plots. The difference is not the subject or type of humour, but how they present it.

South Park would have a serious moment with purposely cheesy dialogue and overly dramatic music parodying a movie, where the main cast doesn't give a crap about the issue at hand.

Family Guy would do a version of the movie replacing the characters with the main cast and include random celebrities, and have non-cheesy dialogue with something happening suddenly, like Peter saying something stupid, or a "this is just like that time when..." line, or doing something absolutely retarded involving one of the celebrities.

Things like that make the difference.
