Default "Please insert correct disc" Need help

I've played MTW2 for a while. I haven't be able to play lately, at first I thought it was because I had a bad disc, but I bought a new one, and am still having the same problem.

I put in the disc(1). The opening menu comes up with uninstall, play, etc. options. I select play, and get an error saying that this is not the correct disc. I've tried exploring the disc to open up MTW2 directly, and get the same "wrong disc" error.

I have tried reinstalling (install works fine). I changed my DVD drive to not burn dvds. My DVD drive is using SATA. I can play the Kingdoms expansion with no problems. I have looked around on the internet for some help with this problem, and have found nothing thus far. I do not want to use any torrents, downloads, mods, etc.

Here are the specs of my machine:

Windows XP Prof. 5.1 build 2600
AMD Athalon 64x2 dual core 4000+, MMX, 3dnow
    2046 MB Ram
    pagefile: 228mb used, 3710mb available
    directx 9.0c
    Nvidia geforce 8600GT (512mb)

The only difference between now and before is that I now use the SATA DVD drive instead of the IDE DVD drive that broke. Kingdoms works on this new drive though. I currently have MTW2 installed on a drive other than the drive my OS is on. I did try to install it on the same drive as the OS (after making room) and it still had the same error.

!!I would appreciate any ideas on this problem!!

Other games I have installed(saw this on another thread, in case it means something):
    The Witcher
    Rome Total War
    Empire Total War
    Lord of the Rings Online
    Space Rangers 2
    Baseball Mogul 2008

Post here also if you need any further info on this problem.

The DVD drive I am currently using came from a Dell that I scrapped. I just tried loading the latest firmware/driver on it, read it on shogun forum. MTW2 still doing the same thing. The DVD drive is a TSSTcorp ts-h493b. In windows, it says it's using a generic driver.. didn't think there would be one for windows, only firmware. Will continue searching.

Windows has generic drivers for about anything.

since it's Dell, have you tried here: http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?...se&qmp=10&p=5?

That's where I got the firmware driver that I installed, and still no dice. I have read on the totalwar boards that the SATA system can mess with optical drives, in some instances(something about the MBrd and dvd not communicated fast enough). I've noticed I can't play a dvd movie in it either, but I can play most games. I decided to break out the wallet and buy an IDE DVD drive, like the one I had. Hopefully, this will make it so that I can play the game.

I also read something about some newer drives not having ATAPI.. not sure if that is relevant or not. Will update this post after the drive comes in and I test it.

I had a similar problem with a brandnew pc when i tried to install Armed Assault once.
It was a Sony DVD RW and my pc didn't even start windows when the ArmA cd was in
the drive. If i tried to activate the autoload by putting the cd inside when windows
was running, i could wait hours without the pc recognizing the cd.

Only solution in that case was another dvd drive. Luckily i found an old mitsumi drive
from an old pc i didn't use anymore.

Anyways a dvd drive is so cheap lately, that you should try that option too
even if you had to buy one. Maybe you get a chance of trying one out before
    buying.

Have you tried using the .exe file instead of the launcher? I made short cuts to the .exe's I use and start the game that way. (If you are playing a mod or vanilla with an edited .cfg file this is particularly useful if you have different versions you play regularly.)

Yes I did try using the exe in the programs file if that's what you're talking about Sword.

I got my LG IDE DVD drive in. The game works well now, in all forms. So, my conclusion is, it was either the dvd drive I had, or something to do with SATA and optical drives.

I believe you are right about SATA and optical drives not being supported by some. Glad to hear it's now working.
