    Default medieval 2 editing unit help

    ok ive read alot on total war center about the whole unpacking stuff and editing a unit, so i did what it said, unpacked the files, and finally found them. well i thought i was done with the hard part but when i go into data, then the export unit file and try to edit a unit, it does nnothing in game. take sherwood archers for example, i went inthe file and found them, then i changed their (bow) primary weapon damage to 15 instead of 13 or whatever and when i went into the game to custom battles to check it out, it did nothing... so yah, i need help

    with a text editor add the following to the top of medieval2.preference, this file is read only so remove this attribute and make your changes, reenable read only or the game will set it back to its default setting.

    [io]
    file_first = 1

    i forgot to mention i did that sorry, so anyway my idea in the future is to make a new faction(or just put the Saxons faction in the game). i've tried making a new unit. i copied the yeoman archers descr and scrolled all the way down to the end and pasted it, then changed some stuff to fit my archer unit, but when i go to custom battles the unit isnt in there. shouldnt there be a blank unit card in the england section that is my "new unit?"

    1. Did you change the 'ownership' to include your faction?
    2. Did you create an entry in data\text\export_units if the name of the unit is different?

    It will help if you post your modified entry here.

    well,... #1. i think cuz i copied the WHOLE yeoman archer descr thing and pasted it at the bottom the only thing i changed is the damage of pri weapon, sec weapon, and name/dictionary name.

    #2 do you HAVE to create a description (as you said in #2) to use the unit in custom battles?
    thanks,

    Guess you didn't convert string.bin into TXT format. Otherwise your question doesn't make sense.
    Get the converter here.

    The link I gave you comes with a readme file. You unzip the file in the data\text folder of your mod and click convert_all. You will need python version 2.6 - doesn't work with the newer 3.1 version. Simply google, download and install.

    ok so i downloaded, and uziped the one u said too, downloaded python 2.6 and everything, put the "covert all" file into the data/text. but when i try to run it, it pops up, then goes away really fast. i thought it was my firewall but idk because when i try to find the "convert all" file to add it to "exceptions" its not there... any ideas?

    Should have said you need to uninstall 3.1 before installing 2.6 (python that is).

    You cannot delete the text folder. There is many more files than the ones he uploaded. You will have to totally uninstall and reinstall the game.
