ANNOUNCEMENT: New Quotes for EB1.2

Greetings Europa Barbarorum Fans!

As I am sure many of you know, there has been an ongoing quotes project over on the Org forums. While the focus of that project was to improve the quality and increase the quantity of the loading screen quotes for EB2, the response has been so good that we have decided to release a slightly abridged version of the new quotes for use with EB1!

Quotes
Descr_quotes_lookup
Descr_transition_screen

Download all three files.

Quotes goes in your EB/data/text folder.
Descr_quotes_lookup and descr_transition_screen go in your EB/data folder.

Say "yes" if asked to overwrite old files. It is always a good idea to backup your old files first, just in case. I will not of course take any responsibility if it all goes wrong somehow, although I might feel bad about it.

That's it. I have playtested these files on my own version of EB1 and have encountered no problems. If anyone does, PM me or post on this thread and I will do what I can to help.

The new quotes file contains ca. 240 quotes, at least half of which are new (you will have seen some of them on the quotes project thread). Almost all of the remaining old quotes have been redone to include correct citations and often the original language. A few old quotes do remain to be redone in this way.

All of the old quotes of questionable historical accuracy have been removed, including the Shakespeare, Confucius and Sun Tzu, as well as any of the other quotes that had questions raised about their authenticity.

The quotes have all been formatted and edited for length and appearance, and the strings have been renumbered from scratch, making it easy for someone to add or modify the quotes if they wish. Anyone interested in doing so is advised to contact me first for some hints.

Bear in mind that the work still remains to some extent WIP: you may find that some of the longer quotes overlap the artwork on the loading screens. The layout on EB2 is somewhat different.

I do not anticipate posting any more versions of these files for EB1. Any further developments will be applied to EB2.

Apropos, there will still be some surprises left for EB2: I left out at least 50 quotes that refer to new factions in one way or another, and I have some more material that has yet to be formatted, so there will eventually be ca. 300 quotes for EB2.

A final note: the files work equally well on any M2TW mod. The only difference is that for M2TW, when you put the quotes.txt file in the EB/data/text folder, you have to delete the quotes string file that is also in that folder. When you start the game, it will generate a new one. If you don't delete it, you will not see any changes to your quotes even if you have correctly installed the text files. You must install the other two files as well, just as for an RTW mod.

A lot of fussy work has gone into getting this right: if you wish to use these files in whole or part for another modification, please ask us nicely first.

Hey guys,

I have just tried to install this onto my EB 1.2 but I got a CTD after the Rome intro movie (just before the first loading screen). I was wondering whether there is anything you guys can suggest to remove the problem. I have double checked the file locations and I have copied the old versions elsewhere

Is your EB installed under Program Files and are you using Vista/Win7? If yes, you will have to overwrite them with administrator rights.

Try to revert to your backups, and copy it again, maybe the overwriting has gone wrong.

How do you mean overwrite them with administrator rights? If that means clicking "OK" when asked for administrator rights while copying, I have done that and it still does not work. I have also tried the whole process quite a few times, so I think I am overwriting them properly. Sorry for being fairly useless, but is there anything else I could try?

Don't be so harsh to yourself, you did exactly what I wanted you to clarify.

So we can assume that the files are fine.
A simply solution would be to install RTW+EB new into another location, not Program Files, and copy your saved games.
To identify what is going wrong I'll ask you to run validation.bat found in your RTW folder. Afterwards we can see what files are changed in your build. If its results are a blank sheet see the second hint from bovi in Installation validation.

I downloaded the new quotes and started to get insane amounts of CTDs.
In two weeks of playing EB I had one. After installing the quotes I had around 10 in 2 days.
CTDs when going into battle and out of battle, CTDs when going from the menu to the campaign map.

So, I did take a look at the quotes and fixed anything that looked suspicious.
I have not had another CTD since then (around 40 turns) so I presume I did something right.
