Icon5 Less soldiers per battalion (while preserving balance)

Edit: Sorry for the tilte it's supposed to read 'Less soldiers per unit'

    Hi,
I'd like to cut the number of units on the battlefield by half, for increased performance and tidier city battles.

I'm new to modding, but I think I can figure out how to change the number by searching on the forums.

Where I need help is in knowing what changes to make to balance, especially from those of you who know the battle mechanics well. For example, I guess missile units will become underpowered if I don't improve their accuracy as they'll shoot at smaller bunches.

So here are some specific questions:
    - Will missile and artillery units need improved accuracy as they'll be shooting at smaller groups?
    - Will pikemen need improved attack to balance the fact they'll present less rows of pikes?
    - Does the effect of unit number on morale loss work in percentages or in fixed values? If it's fixed values it'll have to be tweaked too.
    - Can the number of trolls and mumakils be further reduced or is there a minimum?

Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.

I find it real easy to do this. I go into options at the first screen then I think it is game options, then go to the slider called unit sizes and slide it to normal or small. huge is 2.5 times the size of normal so your units that were 250 are now 100 men. hope that helped.

    *m2twfolder*\mods\Third_age\data\Export_descr_unit.txt

Most of the instructions is written on top inside it. Will give you an example how it works.
So you can learn a bit easier.

    open both spoiler tags.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
; soldier Name of the soldier model to use (from descr_models_battle.txt)
; followed by the number of ordinary soldiers in the unit
; followed by the number of extras (pigs dogs, elephants, chariots artillery pieces etc attached to the unit)
; followed by the collision mass of the men. 1.0 is normal. [Only applies to infantry]

Just tell me if you wan't me to give you one more example for helping. Good luck.

edit: oops, didn't read your first post enough. Changing unit size to smallar in options will make the game unbalanced. Strong things will get stronger, and weak things will get weaker.
aghh.. Time to go to bed, it's 08:05 AM

    - minimum, for units is 4, I think. So trolls and mumakils needs to be made weaker in armour to get
it balanced for smaller unit sizes.
    - I'm not 100 percent sure, but I think morale works by percent.
    - Accuracy only needs a small change, it may be even unnecessary, lower accuracy is also more realistic.
    - And as units running into pikes are smaller too, I think pikes doesn't need any greater change.

I don't get it. If you want smaller units, just play on normal size, not huge.

Yes, I too am pretty sure he missed this option... totalwarpirate, TA:TW starts with huge settings, you need to change that to large, normal or small atm the start of the campaign. This will make all units smaller (and smaller) while retaining the number balance.

    Ahhhh damn, thanks.
I thought the option was not working for mods (it always reverts back to huge), but I was doing it wrong trying to change it in the middle of my campaign.

    Thanks guys.

Also, JuL14n, thanks for your input, but I'm not going through the trouble of editing units now

if you want to rebalance the game, totalwarpirate, you might want to consider tweaking other stats... especially for elves and dwarves
The Duke of Dunwich and surrounding fiefdom

For any who are interested by my FF on occurrences in Rhun and beyond; I have begun a new project (not because the old one is finished, just opening more room for ideas) about one of the minor characters, Rankal. It is in the Third Age AAR index and here is the link http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=376994
