Icon1 Idea for a fantasy mod

First, I have to say I have no modding qualities whatsoever, but sometimes I can be creative. Some time ago I was on holiday, and I started to make up a few factions and units, not even with a Total War game in mind, just for fun, or maybe when I would be rich to pay a company to make a game out of it
Anyway, I recently decided to throw it on this forum, so maybe there can be made a good fantasy mod of it.
I will only describe the factions here, the unit rosters and map will be later, I've never posted images on this site (although it can't be that diff). You will notice I tried to make some original factions, and not classical ones like Orcs and High Elves.

    Factions:

Snow Elves: hardy elves, living in the Northern Mountains, riding griffins, mountain lions and wooly rhino's

Jungle Elves: like wood elves, but more Aztec-like, living in an Amazon-style jungle. Using rafts

Desert Elves: Arab-style elves, riding ostrich, commanding snakes & other reptiles

Coast Dwarves: dwarves armed with fishing nets, tridents. Riding albatros,

Forest Dwarves: dwarves who build their homes in and around the trees, rangers... Riding boars and huge snakes

Nightbound Legions: an army of vampires, fallen angels, summoned deamons...

Catmen: speaks for itself, living in mangrove vegetation, up in the trees ( good climbers)

The Five Realms: five united nations of men, each with it's own speciality

The Grasland Crusaders: men living on vast plains, riding steeds, buffalo's, using the longbow

The Corsairs: men from all around the world, having the unique power of gunpowder

Giants: hurling rocks, living in caves and builing walls of massive rocks

I hope there is some attention for it, because I always love a good fantasy mod.

    Any comments are welcome!!!

i like the idea but not original enough, Dwarves, Elves , Mountain Crusades and Lowland Trolls or Giants heard it all before what about a new original idea like the Curse of the Warpstorm...

I think factions like Grassland Crusaders, consisting of Minotaurs, many ranger units etc. are not likely to be found on many forums, as far as I searched them, neither are the Snow Elves, or Forest Dwarves. You haven't seen unit rosters yet, but still you already think it's not original. Curse of the Warpstorm uses for example a skeleton faction, which I think is used more than factions like Catmen. Not that I do not like CotW, but this one isn't about guns and technology. I will post the faction rosters asap, but right now I'm in the middle of my exams, so it will not be before the 22nd.

To be honest, I thought the Forest Dwarves were very unique. But there are quite a lot of Elves and Dwarves

hmmm doesn't a dwarf live under ground, why not give your own name to it and make it unique

Stereotyping is the curse of any fantasy mod. You just have to live with it and be original about the implementation of it. If your 'Forest Dwarves' are short-in the leg, big bearded and carrying axes ...then you are not original.

If, however, you make your Forest Dwarves far less long-bearded, stiff short and axe wielding... then you take a step forward. Why would you want a beard to get snagged up in the undergrowth etc. You can migrate a Dwarf into a forext...but should consider how they would live, what they would do...and get something different.

Ultimately, everyone nowadays falls back on the Tolkein view of Dwarves, which pretty much influenced the current fantasy view on a Dwarf.

You will have to accept some degree of unoriginality as soon as youbring in aDwarf or an Elf, or you need to find unique names for your races. 'Wood Hewers', perhaps instead of Forest Dwarf. Small in stature to move between the thick trunks, strong in the arm andfavouring a big axe like any farmer of the forest would be. Able to call upon the forest spirits to defend their tree-house homes. Just don't use the 'D' word!!!!

Catmen, though, are not at all original either. Just not as main-stream. No reason why they wouldn't make a good faction though.

You will also fall into the usual problem with your demons and vampires faction. Been there, done that.

Overall, I thin kthe discussion of whether this mod is 'original' or not is missing hte point. If the factions are well thought out, well implemented and nice looking, it iwll be a good mod. Originality is over-rated! I think the biggest concern for hte mod would be getting the people to build some of the more ambitous content.

Albatross riders, giant snakes, Griffons, Wooly Rhino, reptiles etc. are all possible ( with limitations ) but not easy to do.

yeah, you're right about the dwarves. But it's been a couple of years since I made it up, so it's a bit normal that I used Tolkien's image. And of course you're right that it will be difficult to make the models for the animals and such, I guess I'll have to cancel some of the ideas . It 's a pity I can't do it myself. Thx for paying attention to this little thing

I found that a fantasy mod needed at least some monsters

The only way to get a mod off the ground is to take it into your own hands and learn to mod. It'd make sense for someone to say "I don't know C++ so can't mod X game", but Total War is written in a human-readable, non-programming series of files that are rather well-documented with tutorials. The only impediment to learning how to mod is not desiring to, and ultimately if the person who has the idea doesn't want to learn to mod, it probably isn't an idea worth getting behind. Tough love, but the truth no less.
