Star Wars: The Old Republic Official Thread

    Developer: Bioware (Austin)
    Publisher: LucasArts
    Engin: HeroEngine
    Platform: Microsoft Windows
Release Date: TBA (But probally sometime in 2010)
    Genre: MMORPG
    Mode: Multiplayer

    Plot
The story takes place in the Star Wars fictional universe shortly after the establishment of a tenuous peace between the re-emergent Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic, 300 years after the events of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games and 3,700 years before the events in the Star Wars films. The Jedi, held responsible for the Sith's success, are forced to relocate from Coruscant to Tython, where the Jedi order was founded. The Sith control Korriban, where they re-established a Sith Academy. The game begins as new conflicts arise. A collaborative effort between Bioware, Lucasarts, and Dark Horse Comics has resulted in a webcomic entitled "Star Wars: The Old Republic: Threat of Peace" whose purpose is to set up the story as the game opens.

    Gameplay
Members of the two main factions – the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire – will have different moralities; the project's key focus is to differentiate between the player's faction and morality. Each faction will contain different classes, each with a distinct backstory and a branching storyline affected by players' moral choices. Classes will also be exclusive to one faction or the other. Three classes have been confirmed: the Bounty Hunter for the Sith Empire, and the Trooper and Smuggler for the Galactic Republic. Although each class will have a distinct storyline, they will be integrated with the game's overall arc.
Players' choices will permanently open or close storylines and affect players' non-player character (NPC) companions. The game's developers believe that the game will provide more context for characters' missions and quests than other MMORPGs offer. Every NPC in game will feature full voice dialog to enhance gameplay. Players will be able to choose from a variety of NPCs, although spending time with a single companion will help more in developing story and content than dividing time among several. It is possible for players to "blow it big time" if they fail to meet NPCs' expectation. Players will also have access to dozens of planets, including Korriban, Ord Mantell, Nal Hutta, and Tython.

    Development
The Old Republic marks BioWare's first entry into the MMORPG market, and it will be the second Star Wars MMORPG after Star Wars Galaxies. BioWare had long been interested in working on a MMORPG, but waited until they had "the right partners, the right team, and the right I.P." A major focus in the game is on developing characters' individual stories and, in October 2008, BioWare considered this game to have more story content than all of their other games combined. The writing team, which has been working on the game longer than any other developers, includes 12 full-time writers, some of whom have worked on the project for more than two years. The game's first cinematic trailer, "Deceived," was shown at the Electronic Arts 2009 E3 Press Conference on June 1st, 2009.

    Features
    • Experience the next generation in storytelling as an epic Star Wars saga unfolds based on their choices and actions throughout the game.
    • Journey with a variety of intelligent companion characters with whom they can create and nurture relationships, and who offer friendship, assistance or even betrayal, based on how the player chooses to interact with them.
    • Explore a colorful, vibrant galaxy developed to maintain the familiarity of Star Wars while providing a new look and feel to the brand, called stylized realism.
    • Enjoy fun and rewarding gameplay, no matter their gameplay preference, where they can experience all the best features from a traditional massively multiplayer game, along with innovative elements never-before-seen in the genre.

It's Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Knights of the Old Republic (1 and 2) are singleplayer RPG"s set in the same timeline, also from Bioware. They serve as prequels to this MMO.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

I can't wait, though I would have preferred if certain classes were free to choose which side they wanted to fight on, and weren't exclusive to one side or the other.

I wonder if the opportunity exists to make your Republic Jedi follow the Dark Side of the Force and end up on the Sith side...

I doubt it, but not completely, since this is Bioware.

Not at all. I don't doubt that Bioware will be able to tell a good story with SW:TOR. Look at how much story Blizzard has been able to tell with WoW so far. More than they could've with any RTS.

WoW with its permantly frozen timeline tells a good story, no matter that I have done the same quests hundreds of times... to no tangible effect.

you can preety much bet it'll be pay monthly to play but it'll probally be around the same price of other MMO's on the market, anyway going by that CGI Cinematic if they have more of them in the game thats gotta be worth it. Why couldn't they make a whole movie like that.

It's no frozen timeline. The instances and quests remain there for new players, but that doesn't mean that the story hasn't advanced. So many things have happened in WoW, from tiny storylines to huge ones, that could've possibly have been told in any decent amount of RTS games.

From what i understand any person on any side can be "good" or "evil" though, so you could have a good sith lord or evil jedi (actually evil jedi seems pretty much to be possible throughout KOTOR I and II so it seems a bit self evident)

I personally dont like the idea of another star wars MMO. especially not tarnishing a name such as KOTOR...
