Was thinking about using these units for a bit of variety, but I don't know anything about them or their capabilities. Does anyone use them and if so how do you employ them in combat?

Well, they have huge range, and are quite good against militia units (in meele) to

Use them like you would use crossbowmen in MTW.

[Scutarii]

I find them useful. Long Range, armour piercing. The only downside is long reload time. Try to be on the offensive with them so the AI won't rush you as much... You'll have time to unload the ammo. They get better in the late game with more heavily armoured units, much better than archers at that job. Also great against Rome, lots of armour there..
